BDNF - Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor
The more I learn the more I am astounded by the body’s NEED for movement and how movement contributes to it’s RESILIENCE!
BDNF is a protein molecule in our brains associated with cognitive improvement and alleviation of depression & anxiety. As we age BDNF levels decline. BUT, exercise has been proven to increase levels improving cogitation, memory, and overall plasticity of our brains!
If we give the body what it needs (i.e. exercise and healthy nutrition & self-care habits including sleep, stress reduction, time outside) it has the ability to heal itself.
Movement modalities (exercise & movement games) are proven to slow disease progression in patients with MS, stoke & Parkinson’s.
Always remember some movement is better than none!
Exercise advice to improve BDNF…
STIMULATION!! At least 10 minutes of cardio movement (more is better) everyday, learning a new skill or sport, dancing, strength training ((1-4x a week), playing on a playground.
Foods that increase BDNF…
* Green tea. Look for one sourced from Japan, not China. Most Chinese green tea has been with lead
* Blueberries. Choose organic, wild blueberries whenever possible
* Red grapes. Organic dark-colored grapes will give you all the benefits of reservatrol
* Olive oil. Go for cold-pressed, extra-virgin olive oil.
* Organic Soy products are associated with positive health benefits
* Dark chocolate. Cacao contains the phytonutrients that increase BDNF, so choosing a 100% is best bet.
* Turmeric. Pair it with black pepper and a fat source. These both maximize the absorbtion
* Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, and herring). Look for "wild caught" on the label to ensure you get fish with less toxins
* Eggs from pasture-raised chickens preferably
* Coffee (be careful to pick one without molds or toxins)
