As a homebirth midwife I often get asked about the post-birth mess.

My answer is always “don’t even worry about it because it’s a non-issue!”

Yes, birth can be messy, but us homebirth midwives always have a plan for keeping your birth space neat and tidy. We usually leave mom and baby tucked in bed and a bag of trash and a bag of laundry behind, but that’s all. No messes, no stains, no big deal.

So what about the placenta? In my practice it is the job of the new Dad to bury the placenta in the backyard usually.

Waterbirth 🌊

Did you know you can give birth in a birth pool or your own bath tub?

As a homebirth midwife I love taking things nice and slow after a baby has been born in the water. I encourage the mother and baby to do skin to skin and breastfeed in the water while the mother eats and drinks to regain her strength and energy.

Most of the time the placenta is born in the water too!

Then when everyone is ready we move mom and baby to the bed and tuck them in nice and snug.

I’ve heard both good and bad things about Free Birth Society.

As a homebirth CNM I know there are many times at births when I am not needed. There have also been times when I have definitely been needed.

My work goes far beyond catching babies and using specific skills to resolve a postpartum hemorrhage or shoulder dystocia too.

I often find myself softly uttering words of encouragement to the mother in labor or making sure she stays hydrated, changes positions, and keeps her bladder good and empty.

I can’t imagine doing labor alone myself, but understand the many reasons why some women chose that path for themselves.

What are your thoughts on the Free Birth Society investigation?
