October 24th marks World Polio Day, a time to reflect on our incredible progress toward eradicating polio and renew our commitment to a polio-free world. Thanks to vaccines and the efforts of health workers, millions of children have been spared from the devastating effects of this preventable disease. But the fight is not over yet—there are still regions where children remain vulnerable. By working together, raising awareness, and supporting immunization efforts, we can ensure that no child suffers from polio again. Let’s unite to make history and end polio for good.

GCHD proudly supports this incredible milestone for Galveston County!

On October 15th, county and state leaders joined community partners to cut the ribbon on the new Galveston County Mental Health Wellness Center!

Operated by the Gulf Coast Center, this facility provides crisis stabilization services, helping individuals in mental health crisis get immediate care close to home. Instead of transporting patients to Harris County hospitals or the jail, law enforcement can now bring them directly here for support and stabilization.

Galveston County is leading the way in mental health care!

🚨 GCHD Actively Investigating Water & Septic Concerns in Santa Fe 🚨

Today, the Galveston County Health District (GCHD) visited the neighborhood at 2511 FM 646 in Santa Fe, alongside city officials, to speak directly with residents concerned about potential contamination and illness.

"We want the community to know we hear you, and we are actively investigating," said Dr. Keiser, GCHD's CEO and Galveston County Local Health Authority.

Residents have reported unexplained health issues, foul odors, and visible issues with septic systems. Some septic tanks were found with cracks and holes, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued a boil water notice for the area.

The community relies on a private well water system, and multiple agencies, including GCHD, the City of Santa Fe, and TCEQ, are working together to thoroughly investigate all complaints.

GCHD is committed to protecting and promoting the health of all residents.

📢 GCHD Participates in In-Person STAM Training at Houston TranStar!

This week, members of the Galveston County Health District and Galveston County took part in Staging Area Manager (STAM) training at Houston TranStar, a key hub for regional emergency coordination.

The STAM is a vital role within the Incident Command System (ICS), responsible for managing all activities in the staging area where emergency resources wait for rapid deployment on a 3-minute readiness basis.

This hands-on training strengthens our ability to respond quickly and effectively during disasters and public health emergencies.

We’re proud to continue building capacity to better serve and protect our community. 💪🌀🚨
