Galveston County Health District participated in the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management’s Evacuation/Hub Operations Tabletop Exercise.

This exercise brought together agencies from across the county to strengthen our coordinated response during large-scale emergencies. Through a phased scenario, partners worked together to:

• Activate hub operations
• Evaluate the performance of key operational sections
• Improve resource and information management across agencies

These discussions help us identify strengths, address gaps, and enhance our ability to support the community during evacuation events. We value the opportunity to collaborate with our emergency management partners and ensure our plans remain effective and aligned for real-world response.

📢 Flu Outbreak at a Galveston County School

A Galveston County Elementary School is facing an Influenza A outbreak. So far, 30 cases have been reported across the school, including 11 cases in one classroom.
The illness has been mild, and no hospitalizations have occurred; however, none of the individuals were vaccinated for the 2025–2026 flu season.

To help prevent further spread, please remember to:
- Keep sick children home
- Reinforce good handwashing and covering coughs/sneezes
- Clean high-touch surfaces regularly
- Monitor for symptoms

💉 Protect your family this season.
Come to the GCHD Immunization Department for your flu shot!
Getting vaccinated is the best way to reduce illness and keep our school community healthy. For most people with health insurance, the vaccine is free at a facility that accepts your insurance.

⚠️ Big shredded-cheese recall, check your fridge!

More than 260,000 cases of shredded cheese have been recalled across 31 states after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned they may contain metal fragments.

The recall covers multiple shredded-cheese varieties, mozzarella, Italian-style, pizza blends, mozzarella & provolone or mozzarella & parmesan blends sold under store-brand labels at major retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Aldi.

The recall has been classified as Class II, which means eating the cheese could cause temporary or reversible health issues (like mouth, throat or intestinal cuts) serious harm is unlikely, but the risk is real.

If you bought shredded cheese recently, check the brand and “sell-by” date. If it matches affected products, don’t eat it. Either toss it or return it to the store for a refund.
