GCHD Presents at TEHA Gulf Coast Chapter Spring Conference!

The presentation, “Environmental Health in Disasters: A Practical Preparedness and Response Playbook,” provided a clear and actionable overview of strategies to reduce public health impacts before, during, and after disaster events.

Marco Javier, Emergency Management Coordinator with the Galveston County Health District, shared a practical, field-ready approach to disaster preparedness and response. His experience includes prior service with the Texas Division of Emergency Management, where he supported multi-county incident operations, partner coordination, and deployment readiness.

We appreciate the opportunity to share and exchange ideas that strengthen environmental health preparedness across our region.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month ❤️

When it comes to stroke, every second counts. Knowing the signs and acting quickly can save a life.

Remember to act F.A.S.T.:
🧠 Face drooping
💪 Arm weakness
🗣️ Speech difficulty
📞 Time to call 911

Stroke can happen to anyone, but up to 80% of strokes are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices and routine care.

We encourage everyone to learn the signs, take preventive steps, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

We’re proud to highlight an incredible mentorship experience through the Clear Springs Health Science Independent Study Mentorship Program!

Ava Marks, a senior at Clear Springs High School (Class of 2026), has been working one-on-one with Sharon Stonum, MPH, Epidemiology Manager, gaining real-world insight into the field of epidemiology.

Through this program, students receive hands-on experience, career exposure, and personal development by shadowing professionals in their field of interest each week. Ava had the opportunity to dive deep into public health topics, including Salmonella case interviews and Candida auris data analysis.

To wrap up each semester, Ava created projects showcasing her knowledge and growth, an impressive reflection of her dedication and curiosity!

Programs like this help students explore career paths and make informed decisions about their future after high school. Great work, Ava! 👏
