When breastfeeding or pumping ends, your body doesn’t just “turn milk off.”
Weaning activates an inflammatory and immune response that helps break down milk-producing tissue, clear debris, and repair the breast. This process can take weeks to months and that’s normal, this process should not be rushed!
Abrupt weaning results in a higher inflammation rate and duration of inflammation. These are effects associated with breast cancer. Gradual weaning protects breast tissue.
You can wean gradually by:
• Dropping one breastfeeding or pumping session every few days
• Give your body time to adjust
• Support comfort and breast health along the way (Ibuprofen is effective at mediating the inflammation level)
Breast care doesn’t end when feeding ends.
Your breast health still deserves support.
