Last night, 2 out of my 3 kids woke up in the middle of the night. My 7-year-old actually woke up twice and even made a little sleep pallet on my floor so she could be close to me.
And the reasons they woke up?
The same reasons your baby might wake up, too.
✨ To go p*e (They have a wet diaper)
✨ They needed connection
✨ They were too hot or too cold
✨ They don't feel well or had a bad dream
This is your reminder that sleep is not a developmental milestone. Even adults don’t sleep straight through the night we get up to use the bathroom, adjust blankets, get a drink of water, or cuddle closer to our partner.
And here’s the other piece we don’t talk about enough:
Babies need to wake often to eat.
If you’re breastfeeding, your prolactin (your milk-making hormone) peaks at night. That means those nighttime feeds are not only normal, they’re important. Eliminating them too early can reduce your milk supply.
So let’s give our babies more grace.
They’re not meant to fit into a “sleeping through the night” box.
They’re just being human growing, connecting, and doing what their bodies are designed to do.
