Last night, Marcus had the pleasure of speaking at a networking event hosted by and . He shared how he became a gardener, a couple life-changing lessons his plants taught him, and the connection between nature & personal well-being.

“Plant people” (gardeners, farmers, landscapers, feed store employees, nursery managers, and more) came together to get to know one another, and the group was kind and welcoming to us.

Our friends & tea business partners and Steven Skiff were in attendance as well, giving Mark the opportunity to share herbal details about our teas with shoppers

Thankfully we ordered more books ahead of the event because we only have two left. If you’re looking for an uplifting read as spring approaches, we recommend How to Grow.

Last week, Marcus spoke to the Woodlands Rotary International for their lunch program.

Rotarians are dedicated service, so he discussed the importance of maintaining our well-being to maximize our impact.

He likened people of service to fruit trees. If an apple tree is diseased or living in a poisoned environment, its fruit won’t provide valuable sustenance for other beings. The tree must be well for its fruit to be well.

Similarly, we cannot volunteer our time if we are exhausted, or think creatively about solving issues if we are overly stressed.

Marcus knows what it’s like to run himself thin as well as what this means for others. As a teacher, he gave all his energy to his students until he had none left for himself. How could he continue being a good teacher if he was struggling? Fortunately, he became aware of what was happening and found ways to create balance in his life.

Thank you, Woodlands Rotary, for having him.

“Yesterday was a big day. I took my first flight with my son!

As you can imagine, or remember from experience, the first trip is a learning curve. We tried to pack light but still needed to find an efficient way to manage the stroller, car seat, car seat base, and all of our luggage.

I made it to the TSA agent at security, only to be informed I needed a boarding pass for the baby... Somehow, when checking our luggage, we missed the small box to confirm our “lap infant” was with us that would put his boarding pass on my phone. OK - I returned to the United desk, got the baby’s boarding pass, and went through security a second time.

All while my wife was in a separate security line because of an issue with her pre-check...

Finally I made it through security (while my wife was still in the other line), and sat on a bench to wait for her. At this time, the exhaustion of not sleeping much, waking up early, and travel preparations were catching up with me. While having a nice chat with a man I met, three women approached me.

“Excuse me... Are you Marcus?” One asked.

“Yes, I’m Marcus.” I responded.

“Are you Garden Marcus?”

“Yes, I am.” They smiled to each other.

“I thought it was you, and I knew you had a baby recently so I decided to come and ask.”

They follow me on social media and wanted to let me know they appreciate my content & positivity, and said our interaction was a great start to their trip.

Amidst the hustle, bustle, and the grind of travel I was fortunate to meet several awesome people, and have some uplifting conversations. This reminds me that when we lead with kindness, patience, and positivity we open ourselves up to quality interactions, and continued growth.

I was also reminded of the importance of being in the present moment. There’s a lot of negativity in the media that can weigh on us and make it hard to maintain a positive mindset. What’s happening in our personal lives can add to the chaos. I believe we can foster change in the world if we prioritize respect and connection with our fellow person.

Here’s to my next quality interaction. Maybe it will be with one of you.”

About Choice Forward

Choice Forward is a series of lifestyle tools designed to help people become stronger individuals. Every person has a unique perspective based on their collection of experiences, and nobody else can see through another person's eyes. Many people do not realize that they have a choice in how they perceive their experiences, and how they can use the tool of perception to better their lives and increase their access to opportunities. Those who use the Choice Forward tools will encourage positive communication, productive environments, and healthy communities. We offer a base vocabulary that helps people articulate their thoughts, choices, and experiences in ways that allow them to be easily understood by others. Through awareness of the tool of perception, we will bring respect to perspectives.
