The hip is one of the commonly replaced joints in the body. Learning how to retrain your body to move with your “new” hip can feel challenging and painful but physical therapy can help improve your recovery process. Our physical therapists can assess movement and tissue impairments, gait patterns, and activity limitations after a hip replacement. Then a plan can be developed to help you reach your goals appropriately. According to John O’Halloran’s article Total Hip Replacement: 3 Exercises for an Earlier Return of Functional Gait published on Medbridge, exercises that focus on early lengthening of the hip flexors, early core exercises, and facilitation of pelvic girdle and quadriceps can help improve a person’s gait.
Post-operative exercises for an earlier return to normal gait:
1.Heel slide hip flexor lengthening exercise: after you slide your heel out, it is important to tighten your glutes and perform a pelvic tilt to stretch the affected hip flexor muscle
2.Abdominal bracing
3.Forward lunges

There are many things that can be done to help improve non-ideal standing and sitting postures. One is to retrain and strengthen the shoulder girdle, back, abdominal, and neck muscles with a variety of exercises and stretches to put your body in a better position to move and dissipate force. Another option to is to be aware of sitting time and schedule standing breaks or a change in work position.

Posture is defined as the position in which someone holds their body when standing or sitting. It is a very important feature that can determine how the human body moves and tolerates loads (weight, gravity, etc.). Ideal posture is thought to be best for the overall health of the body because muscles are at their appropriate length and forces are distributed evenly and properly through the structures that are meant to dissipate force.
Non-ideal postures are very common and can often be a cause of pain or discomfort, especially in the low back, neck, shoulders, and hips. With these postures, muscles, ligaments, and joints can become shortened, lengthened, or compressed, altering the body’s ability to tolerate loads, produce force, and create movements.1,2 Over time, these structures can lose range of motion and break down due to excessive strain or shearing forces placed upon them, leading to pain and compensation.
The most common non-ideal posture in sitting is called slump sitting with forward head posture, which is often accompanied by rounded shoulders. With societal norms, and especially with stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines, many jobs, and now schools, are requiring the use of computers, devices, and cell phones to complete tasks. This may lead to an increase in low back, neck, arm, and shoulder pain associated with non-ideal forward head and sitting posture.

"I started at Conejo valley physical therapy in 2010 and my legs were huge from lymphedema, both of them. From the very beginning Jennifer showed me how to really take care of my legs and [how if] I followed the program I would see results. She made no promises of how much, just that I would continue to see progress. Well it's 2019 and I am at 1/3 of my weight, my legs have continued to approve and they are so small. Everyone else and I saw just wanted me to maintain and not get bigger I have followed the path she taught me to follow and I have only four sizes left to get down thanks to CVPT! I know I only see the light at the end of the tunnel but I've got my legs in the sunshine. Thank you Jennifer and all of the staff! I would [give] them 5 stars out of 5 stars!!!"

Here is Mahnaz’s CVPT story!
- Came into the PT clinic with significant R shoulder pain that prevented her from
performing her job functions as a yoga instructor and also affected her sleep.
- The first month of PT was a challenge, decreasing aggravating factors by modifying her
yoga movements and being more aware of posture and sleep position. We also worked
on slowly strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles.
- Now, Mahnaz is back to teaching yoga full time through zoom classes and is able to
perform almost all of her movements without pain. Her final physical therapy goal is to
be able to perform both a headstand and handstand without R shoulder pain. Stay
tuned to see if Mahnaz can pull it off in the coming weeks!

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle manual treatment technique that manually moves the interstitial fluid. We treated the Right Lower Extremity. The left photo was taken at initial evaluation and the right photo was taken 2 weeks after receiving Lymphedema Therapy. Lymphedema treatment includes four main steps:
1. Manual Lymph Drainage
2. Graduated Compression Garments
3. Skin Care
4. Lymphedema Exercises
Lymphedema most often develops in one arm or leg, but may also occur in many parts of the body. Lymphedema may develop within a few months after a procedure, years later, or not at all. The first sign of Lymphedema is swelling and if you think yourself or someone you know may be at risk for lymphedema, please give us a call!
Jennifer will be speaking tomorrow at the cancer center in Westlake at 6:00PM! Come listen to her informative speech on lymphedema!

Single Leg Balance on Therafoam with Volleys @scwebb23 with @ausin7803 using therafoam and a soccer ball to perform sport specific volleying drills. Emphasis on maintaining hip strategy by limiting excessive flexion of the knee by increasing hip flexion with a neutral spine. This helps to put increased demand/load on the gluteals vs. the quadriceps. Balance on therafoam increases the demand of the exercise by creating an unstable surface. #conejovalleypt #conejovalley #physicaltherapy #pt #physio #physiotherapy #passing #volley #volleydrills #orthopedics #exercise #messi #beckham #reynaldo #physiotherapy #physio #improvethewayyoumove #getptfirst #health #fitness #workout #gym #training #health #active #soccer #soccerdrills #stabilitytraining #sportspecific
Single Leg RDL with Foam Roll Sarah likes to use a foam roller with patient’s who are learning single leg RDLs to give an external cue and increase proprioceptive inputs which help to increase stability. Here you can see @ausin7803 using the foam roller while hinging from the hips. This exercise emphasizes using hip strategy, which is limiting excessive flexion of the knee by increasing hip flexion with a neutral spine. Single leg RDLs are great exercises to eccentrically load the hamstrings and gluteals while challenging single leg stability. #conejovalleypt #conejovalley #physicaltherapy #pt #physio #physiotherapy #passing #volley #volleydrills #orthopedics #exercise #messi #beckham #reynaldo #physiotherapy #physio #improvethewayyoumove #getptfirst #health #fitness #workout #gym #training #health #active #soccer #soccerdrills #stabilitytraining #sportspecific
