It’s been nearly 2 years that I haven’t posted on this account, and by doing that, I was able to give my family and my clients a lot more of my time and attention. I’m back, but will be posting mindfully, keeping my mental health and family as top priority!

This event felt like a big enough deal to have a permanent spot on my feed :)
First of all, I had a new baby 🥰 💞her name is Rhea and she’s 4 months old. Life has certainly been an adjustment with 3 children.

The main reason for my post, is that yesterday, the had the grand opening of its first ever depot site in Ventura County; this is a huge event for the local breastfeeding community, and I was so very excited to be their first donor to drop off milk at the new site.
Rhea and I donated about 100oz of our milk. This milk will be processed by the and used for sick/premie babies who need it.

If you or anyone you know have extra milk to donate, ask me about milk donation.

𝙈𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧’𝙨 𝘿𝙖𝙮!

Every year, on this day, I post almost the same words.

I’ve been there, I know the struggle. For years, I was waiting, wanting, wishing! For years, I noticed every pregnant person on the street, every round belly on social media, and ached at every birth announcement.

If this is you, I see you, I feel you, I am you!
You are already a mother. Celebrate this day, and every day!

Mental health has been one of the biggest concerns for all of us during this pandemic, but specifically for new postpartum parents, we have seen a surge of mental health issues, sometimes going undetected for way too long.

My friend Allison from Rooted in Harmony Counseling will be joining me on IG Live on Wednesday, May 5th at 9:30am PST (California Time) to chat about the difference between Baby Blues and postpartum depression (or other perinatal mental health issues), and help us understand when and where to seek help.

If you have any questions for us to address, please comment below and we’ll make sure to answer them next week.

🌙𝙍𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙖𝙣 𝙁𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 and 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 🌙

The lunar Month of Ramadan starts tomorrow. May it bring joy and light to all those who observe it.

Ramadan is observed by fasting from dawn to sunset, for 30 days, and the question of breastfeeding during Ramadan comes up every year.

Check the slides below for my tips on Breastfeeding during the Fast.

Do you have any tips to add? Do you have any questions about fasting and breastfeeding?

Did you know that crying is a very late hunger cue? ⁣

Think about how you feel by 3:00pm if you missed lunch. is an understatement, right? In baby terms, that’s what crying indicates, especially if baby has been trying to tell us they’re hungry but we didn’t listen. ⁣

The above are the early signs that baby needs to feed, whether it’s been half an hour or 3, it doesn’t matter, picking up on those cues means a happy baby whose calm enough to learn to latch and breastfeed. ⁣

If we wait until baby starts crying, latching will become frustrating, especially if it has been a challenge already. Excessive crying leads to excessive gas, and leads to general fussiness, and definitely a more stressed parent. ⁣

So how about this: When in doubt, just nurse!! ⁣

Do you have any questions about newborn behavior?⁣

On the occasion of National Choking Awareness Day, I wanted to bring a little awareness on the matter of gagging and why it is such an important and GOOD reflex to witness with our babies. I also talk about what to do and what not to do in the event that you need to help your baby in a choking emergency.

I hope this is helpful, let me know in the comments if you have any questions.

𝙎𝙬𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜!

This is such a huge topic in the baby world. Swaddling can be a great tool to soothe newborns, but there’s so much conflicting information.
There are also SO many brands of swaddles on the market right now, and some are even embedded into the bassinet, forcing babies into super tight and restricted positions.
Here are some facts about swaddling:

✨It is not a right of passage for babies: some hate swaddling, and that’s a perfectly valid reason not to swaddle. Neither of my kids were swaddled (only my first for a week because I thought I had to!)

✨the AAP recommends transitioning out of swaddling by about 8 weeks of age (or even earlier)

✨ A newborn baby has had their hands as a source of comfort and sensory input throughout their womb life, they will continue to need the comfort of their hands after birth! There’s no reason to take their hands away from them (this could also apply to mittens 🤷🏻‍♀️).

✨We should NOT swaddle babies tightly with their arms pinned to their sides!!!! This is an unnatural position for baby, and can cause tension in their shoulders, arms, chest, and even hips. Over the chest or up by their shoulders are preferred positions.

✨Always make sure your baby is not too warm in a swaddle as it may make baby sleep longer than they should (remember that waking is a survival mechanism for humans).

✨Always unwrap Baby when feeding, to prevent overheating, and promote a better position at breast.

✨Give Baby as much non-swaddled time throughout the day as they are swaddled. This will ensure enough movement, and will allow the reflexes to integrate better. If your baby needs to be swaddled past the newborn stage, there are things that can help!

How this relates to breastfeeding?

🤱🏻A newborn who’s too warm may not wake as often as they should, this could lead to dehydration, issues with weight gain, or a problem with milk supply

🤱🏻I’ve seen many babies start latching poorly at 2 & 3 months of age due to over-swaddling, and especially in the tight arms down position. This is due to all the tension building up in the body, leading to a tight jaw and mouth as well.

Do you have any questions on swaddling?

𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙉𝙊𝙍𝙈𝘼𝙇!

It’s also NORMAL for you to respond to their wakings, by nursing, cuddling, shushing, rocking, swaying, patting, (insert whatever method you like to comfort your child with), etc....

Infants and children go through many many sleep changes. They often happen at predictable times, but may just happen out of nowhere too.

Here are some reasons why your baby may start waking at night again, even after months of sleeping long stretches:
▪️teething
▪️growth spurt
▪️mental leap
▪️a new milestone (they want to practice!)
▪️separation anxiety (checking on you!)
▪️a survival mechanism
▪️under stimulation
▪️overstimulation
▪️missing you after a day at work
▪️adjusting to a big change
▪️too hot
▪️too cold
▪️hungry
▪️thirsty....
Did I forget anything?

Whatever the cause, responding to your child’s waking with your comforting presence shows them how to regulate and fall back asleep, through their interaction with you.

What I’m trying to say is that “Self soothing” is not a concept that infants and young children are biologically capable of, so we need to stop expecting them to act like adults. Babies are also incapable of manipulating, so each and every one of their waking is a need waiting to be met.

Also, you know what? B**b pretty much solves every single one of those issues, so if that works for you, just keep on b**bin’

𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙄𝘽𝘾𝙇𝘾 𝘿𝙖𝙮!

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, which is what my job is, basically a b**b job 😁

My dream for this world is for every new parent to have access to skilled lactation care, regardless of their age, skin color or financial situation, preferably starting before birth. This means, all breasts are examined BEFORE birth, and medical history is evaluated to anticipate and educate on any possibly arising issues. Then every dyad is seen soon after birth, and help is provided as needed, before complications start. Ahh, for this to come true, means every parent would make an informed decision about feeding their baby, and exclusive breastfeeding rates would increase, leading to healthier children and a healthier planet. One can dream!

Today is meant to celebrate the work lactation consultants do to support parents in their feeding journeys. If you received support from an IBCLC that you love, today is the day to send them a note, write them a review, or just check in and say hi. We love love love to hear updates from parents and babies we met along the way!

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝟰𝟬!

Age has never been anything but a number to me. I’ve always embraced my age, and celebrated it.
This year feels different though! I’ve been having all sorts of feelings and emotions this past month. Lots of thinking about what’s important, and lots of trying to “figure things out”! Is this what a midlife crisis feels like? 😂😂

I’m sure the pandemic has something to do with the way I’m feeling! I had big plans for my 40th birthday, big plans for the way I’m going to look/feel when I’m 40, and none of it came true.

It’s ok though, I’m not sad, just going through lots of growing, learning, and trying new things/ways!

I’m so blessed with a family that loves me unconditionally, and friends that I can call at any moment like no time has passed since we last spoke! That’s what’s important to me!

𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨:

As in MDs (aka doctors), nurses, nutritionists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, lactation consultants, etc...

We are all human, and our knowledge is altered not just by which school we attended or what quality education we got. Our knowledge is altered by our Personal experiences, work experiences, the experiences of the clients we served, our traumas, our emotions, and our different philosophies in general.

Just because someone has a certain credential doesn’t make them all-knowing, and it certainly doesn’t ensure that their approach will be the right fit for you.
Ok, hear me out!

If your PT tells you to let your baby cry through the exercises because they are good for them, but this goes against your parenting approach, then it’s appropriate to find someone else,

If your Pediatrician tells you it’s time to supplement or switch to formula, without a clear plan to get back to breastfeeding, or without a referral to a lactation consultant, BUT, breastfeeding is important to you, then it’s appropriate to seek another opinion,

If your doctor tells you your baby just has colic and you just have “to wait it out” and it will pass, but you know in your gut that something is wrong, then seek someone who’ll work with you to figure out what that is! No
If your lactation consultant is not supportive of YOUR personal goals, then find someone who is.

You get the gist!

Have you had to seek out professionals who better align with your beliefs?

𝘚𝘰 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺?

Oxytocin is a hormone that is involved in childbirth and breastfeeding, but also associated with empathy, trust, sexual activity, and relationship-building.

We often call it the “Love Hormone” because the hormone is released, which means the levels of oxytocin rise, in “love” situations such as skin to skin, breastfeeding, hugging and sexual in*******se.

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨?
The simple act of putting the baby to the breast, stimulates the release of oxytocin, the love hormone. In turn, oxytocin causes the muscles in the breast to contract and the ducts to release the milk (also called the Milk Ejection Reflex or Milk Letdown) for baby to drink.

Oxytocin can be released in anticipation of a feeding even, which explains why some parents leak milk as soon as their baby starts rooting or even when it gets close to feeding time.

The higher the oxytocin levels, the more likely your are to bond with your baby, but also, the more you engage in bonding activities with your baby, like holding, skin to skin, bathing together, babywearing,... the more oxytocin is released. I hope I explained this as well as it sounded to me 😁

Interestingly, some evidence suggests that non-birthing parents, as in fathers or partners, can also have higher levels of Oxytocin in response to parenthood, especially when they spend time interacting with their newborns/children! Isn’t that amazing!

I hope your Valentine’s Day was filled with Oxytocin ❤️

Oh, and also, 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚’𝙨 𝘿𝙖𝙮!

2 years ago, I intentionally started this account, and officially launched my business, on Valentine’s Day!

To me, my logo is the epitome of love. There’s no Love greater than a parent has for their child, and that’s what “Love & Latch” is all about. In my image (aka logo), I see a parent and their child, I see them feeding them liquid gold, and I see tenderness and affection!

There’s also the love of what I do.
When I’m helping a breastfeeding dyad, I am connected to them, I then spend hours researching and thinking of other ways to help them, I cry with them when things are hard, and then cry when we have our first breakthrough!

On this Valentine’s Day, and every day, Love & Latch is here for you and your baby!

I often get messages from new parents telling me how painful breastfeeding has been. Most of the messages are followed by “I’ve watched numerous videos on latching, but they haven’t helped, and this has been going on for ... ( 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦)”!

I feel for those parents, I really do! Especially this year, parenting has felt so isolated and lonely! On top of that, there’s SO MUCH information available on social media, which can be extremely overwhelming.

Parents often don’t know they can and SHOULD actually get help hands on, or at least virtually 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡! You have the right to get personalized care, you have the right to figure out the problem, you have the right to get breastfeeding to become comfortable again, you have the right to create a plan that works for you, and you have the right to enjoy breastfeeding/ pumping/ combo feeding again!

Watching videos and reels, as fun as it is, just does not cut it. Videos are snapshots of the knowledge a professional can provide you, and I often use videos to show clients examples of what I’m recommending, they are a tool that supports my 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣 that varies widely for each dyad!

If you’re having trouble, there is help, the type of help that is wrapped in empathy, warmth, and kindness, because you deserve to be showered with those when you’re a new parent!

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙏𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙚 𝙏𝙞𝙚?

We all have a frenulum under our tongue. A frenulum is the little piece of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. In some cases, this tissue is too tight (not stretchy) or too short, which leads to a restriction in the tongue movement and function. This is when we call it a tongue tie, ankyloglossia, or tethered oral tissue.

A normal tongue should be able to elevate to the roof of the mouth freely, move side to side in the mouth, and stick out past the lips. It also should have a wave-like motion when baby is at the breast to facilitate milk transfer.

A restricted tongue, with a tight or short frenulum (or both), will not be able to do all of that. This certainly will cause issues with breastfeeding, that can range from a painful latch, to air gulping, gassiness, poor weight gain, a complete inability to breastfeed and so much more...

But breastfeeding problems are not the only issue tongue ties cause. A functional tongue is essential to the proper growth of the mouth and skull, which means it can lead to restricted room for teeth. It is also essential for proper breathing, eating solids, and speaking properly. Not to mention that a tight tongue can lead to tension in the rest of the body, leading to structural issues as well. For those reasons, addressing oral restrictions early is essential!

For clarification, the mere presence of a frenulum does not indicate a tongue tie. It is the tongue 𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 that matters.
Working with a team of providers who are knowledgeable about oral restrictions is crucial. The team will help you work on restoring function, releasing tensions, and advise if a procedure is necessary.

Both of my kids had tongue ties, but only one needed a release. Did your baby have one?

What's your opinion about giving my 7 months old, EBF baby girl IRON drops?

Do you think it's better if i do blood test and give her the iron ONLY if she has deficiency?
This popped up on my memories today! Dawn Bower, My Lactation Consultant is still the best IBCLC in the valley. Her knowledge is extensive, and she’s pretty much like an under cover breastfeeding detective for the CIA. Or maybe she’s like the person you call in the mafia when you need a job done? You get the point.

This year I’m thrilled that my friend and former colleague, Love & Latch by Samar Mroue, RN, BSN, IBCLC joined the ranks of IBCLC. Samar has a way of connecting with parents that you don’t see often. Her background as a pediatric RN makes her extremely knowledgeable, but not overly clinical...she’s treats you like a peer. The Thousand Oaks area is SO lucky to have this breastfeeding guru at their service!! Her services even extend over seas as she helps breastfeeding parents in Lebanon and beyond. She’s made a difference from afar and that is huge.

Lastly, Happy IBCLC Day to the sweet Bakersfield Birth Center midwife Justine!! The work you do protects breastfeeding from the very start. You leave baby in their natural habitat, skin to skin, without any strict time limits. Your ability to provide this amazing, perfect, biologically normal start for families is remarkable - and makes people want to continue procreating (who me?! 😛).

All the IBCLCs out there. Thank you for your work. There are so many roles at which this profession is applied. Each one just as important than the next.

Google just told me that IBCLC Day is actually on March 6th, but I’m still sharing this, because as the post says, we celebrate IBCLCs every damn day!
Happiest birthday to the most caring, the most supportive, the most helpful! Happy birthday to the most sensitive and beautiful soul Samar Mroue!

Hi first good luck with your new page.
My question is: my lo's first tooth just broke out at 10 months and biting has started. When he is nursing for nutrition it is okay but it is comfort nursing sessions that hurt.
How can I break the biting habit?
If some blood from the cracked ni**le leaked with the milk would it hurt him?
Dima Babilli Harrington good luck ❤
Hi do u think it is possible to stop bf at 15 months without crying? My husband tried for few nights to hold him at night when my lo wakes up but there was crying and he didnt sleep well. And i am so tired!
I need your help Samar Mroue. 😊
