Huge shout out to , our local triathlon super club here in town and especially Jenn Chebi for her first full and qualifying for Hawaii Ironman World Championships! Here's a really interesting case of knee pain whose cause was not actually the knee.

A runner and a firefighter with a right knee pain while running. He was aware that his right foot "flicked out" while running (bottom pic) and suspected it may have to do with his knee pain.

The issued forest fighting boots he wears do not flex through the sole which have forced him to turn his feet out when traversing up and down steep terrain with 80lbs of equipment on his back.

Exam showed he had unknowingly created a compensation pattern in stance and movement that he carried into his running.

We worked on calf and big toe stretches (both were really tight) as well as intentional patterning of his walking and running gait. There was also lots of hip tightness that needed to be unwound.

The before and after were awesome to see and with some dedicated homework he will be back in the game in no time. (after pic is on top)

In his words- "The instant improvement was life changing man!"

This patient got a running gait assessment, Neurokinetic Therapy, Active Release Technique ART, and Fascial Stretch Therapy FST.

Do you get cramps while exercising?

“Cramping is usually a sign that you’re running faster than you’re trained for."-Gene D***s, 70yr old marathoner who just ran 2:54:23 (a world record for his age group.

This is likely the most common reason cyclists and runners cramp- not doing enough work in training at the level you're expecting to perform at. You're not lacking electrolytes and salts, and it's probably not dehydration.

Intensity-specific exercise and weight training are more likely where you'll find the solution.

Crampy Toes? It's probably not low electrolytes. The most common cause that we see in our clinic is the feet will overwork to offset the glutes and hamstrings which get shut off from all that sitting.

Try stretching the calves and doing some glute bridges 3-5x/day and say bye-bye to those crampy toes!

I’m a cyclist, I’m getting older, and I went to see Rich because my right side SI joint hurt all the time, and despite years of yoga and stretching and PT, it was just stuck. Talking to Rich is easy, and he takes everything into account, not just the stuck SI joint. Stuff like, plantar fasciitis on that side. And IT band pain, on that side. And piriformis syndrome, on that side. Oh, and the 10-year-old knee replacement, on that side. He said maybe I wasn’t the 250 piece puzzle. Maybe the 500. Probably the 1000. And that it would take several sessions. Our journey led from one thing to another until we finally figured knee replacement = limited quad stretch = limited ability to use the whole quad maybe = stuck SI joint. He showed me several exercises including the Foundation lunge decompression which I did daily for a week. It opened up my right side hip flexor and the quad. Next time after warming up my back with heavy vibration and heat, Rich was able to adjust that SI joint and voila: no more pain. It’s gone. That was 2 weeks ago. It’s still gone. It took 5 sessions. Thank you Rich. I haven’t had a chiropractor with this skill level since Dr. Tim Binder in Boulder in the 70s and that’s saying something.
