Are you fighting to heal or fighting to stay broken? I will never forget when I was in a therapy session, and my therapist challenged my depressive thought that told me that my entire day was completely ruined, despite there being hours left in the day I was complaining about.

I was ready to stop seeing my therapist for good because I felt invalidated by him, and when I finally got home and took a step back I realized that I was fighting to stay depressed by being committed to a thought that was not only untrue, but a thought that was hurting me.

Now I pose the question to you: Are you fighitng for your wellness or your illness?

AVOID your pain.

Avoidance is the #1 thing that keeps all mental health struggles going. Once you are made aware of your inaction it becomes a choice.
You do not have to remain stuck, as there are always ways to fight back. I hope at least one of these tips are helpful!

How well do you really know yourself? Here is something I learned...

Neglect, which is defined as "fail to care for properly", creates very deep attachment wounds.
Unfortunately there are several different ways that you can be neglected, but the #1 form of neglect that I see in the patients I serve is SELF-NEGLECT.

This doesn't have to be the case, and self-neglect, like every other problematic behavior pattern, is usually taught to us when we are very young.

Somewhere along the line you learned that you were not valuable or important, and you continue to act in accordance with this line of thinking, despite the fact that it's hurting you, and keeping you from sharing your gifts with the world.

It's never too late to change the narrative.

Anger is a universal human emotion that can teach us a lot about ourselves.
It arises when we feel out of control and when one of our softer more vulnerable emotions such as disappointment or shame becomes a little too difficult to sit with.

As much I as tell people to explore their anger and stop avoiding it, there are times when it's not safe to express just how angry we really are.

Whether you are in a professional setting, alone, or simply in the presence of people where it's best for you to calm yourself down, please note that there are several different ways you can gain control of your anger, instead of allowing it to control you. With every coping skill you learn always remember that practice makes progress.

Are you truly over your past or...

Are you just "all good now" because you're actively avoiding everything in your life that reminds you of the things that have harmed you?

So many people don't understand that it's possible to look at past traumas, without experiencing pain.

True healing happens when we take the power out of our emotional triggers, not when when bury our emotional triggers deep underground and convince ourselves they no longer exist.
It's possible to get your mind to agree with this faulty narrative, but your body cannot be fooled.
It's never too late to break free from emotional bo***ge.

But having parents with limitations is NOT an excuse about why you continue to have unhealthy relationships and unmet goals.

You have so many more resources now to determine what's healthy and what's not, and if you don't know where to look, here are 3 ways to have healthier communication.

For years I fought hard to appear like a perfect person. But the truth is...

Perfection is not real, and hiding our pain only gives it the space to grow larger.

I used to be fearful about sharing that I have struggled with my mental health, because as a helping professional and a Christian I wanted to present as someone who seemingly had it all together...

This was a complete lie, and if there's anything I learned from the mental health field and my faith, it's that telling the truth is the only way to ultimately free us from pain.

The truth is that everyone has struggled with their mental health, even if they have beautiful pictures on Instagram or seem well loved.

What we present to the world is not always reflective of how we feel inside, and it's the beliefs that we have about ourselves and others that will dictate how fulfilling our lives can be.

Are you missing out on important opportunities, or relationships?

If so, chances are you are not actively listening to the people around you.

You may be misunderstanding those closest to you without even realizing it.

The #1 reason communication conflicts occur is because people are more focused on replying than truly understanding.

In your next conversation see what happens when you reflect back what the person is saying, ask open-ended questions (question that begin with "what" or "how"), and clarify if advice or comfort is needed.

For years I lived in a "Flight" trauma response and I didn't even know it.

I would pride myself on how hard of a worker I was, all while being blind to the fact that being a "workaholic" was actually my attempt to avoid looking within.

As difficult as some work shifts were, I found safety in being "on the clock".

Overcommitting ourselves to jobs, schools, and people who devalue us simply hurts, and it will ultimately leave us feeling lost and confused.

We don't have to continue to suffer under the comfort of familiarity.

An important step to healing from emotional pain is identifying how you respond to it.
The below responses are survival techniques, but they are not sustainable.

Even if we've been connected to our trauma response for years, it's still possible to break free and obtain relief.
