Hi friends, Sarah here.

As a healer and guide, I feel a deep commitment and passion when it comes to showing up for others - creating moments of mind-body-spirit restoration through qigong mindful movement, acupressure, meditation, and more.

The state of the world and in the US hit me really hard the past few weeks. So much so that I went into hermit-mode and cancelled most of my plans (which the recent snow and icy temperatures only reinforced).

With the constant nervous system overload that many of us are exposed to, making time for moments of rest and restoration is so crucial for our homeostasis and vitality. [Link to free event below]

My chinchilla Nikki 🐭 (my little Buddha) is well versed in balance.
When she feels good, she plays.
When she needs to recoup, she rests.

🥰If you're in need of some restoration, join us this Saturday (Feb 14th) at 10:30am-12pm for a FREE Online Wellness Class + Community Circle. Register to receive the zoom link: https://www.qigonghw.com/qigong-classes2/2/14/26-2

As a collective, we need healing, support, and light more than ever right now. Healing is amplified within sacred community.

During our experience together, we’ll practice mindful movement (qigong), acupressure, and meditation from the comfort of your own home or space.

Then, you’re invited to share whatever support or healing you may need - perhaps simply taking solace in the fact that we’re joining together to create more light - offer kindness to others, and anything else that feels authentic in the moment.

You’re welcome to bring a journal, tea, sage, crystals, oracle cards, and/or anything else that brings you comfort to connect with during our experience.

*This event is in lieu of my previously scheduled Sensory Self-Care: A Journey to Love and Wellness workshop at Manor Mill.

⭐Tips for Upgrading Your Sleep Hygiene!⭐

[First, do the sleep habits check-in.]

1. Mind-Body Check-in:
- Practice deep breathing, meditation, and/or gentle stretching to help you relax before bed.
- You may also find reading soothing (but nothing too mentally stimulating).
- For further relaxation, drink some warm tea (ex: chamomile for a more gentle calm, or valerian root for stronger support).

2. Screen Time:
- Reduce exposure to screens at least an hour before bed, as blue light can interfere with your body's natural sleep-wake cycle.
- You can also wear blue light blocking glasses to help with the transition (and reduce eyestrain).

3. Temperature:
- Science suggests the ideal temperature for restful sleep is between 60-68 degrees Fahrenheit, helping you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep cycles.

4. Noise:
- As much as possible, ensure your sleeping environment is free from disruptions.
- Consider using a white noise machine, soothing music, and/or earplugs.

5. Light:
- Use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block out residual light, signaling to your body to naturally produce melatonin for better sleep.

6. Bedtime Consistency:
- Aim to go to bed at the same time each night, whether on the weekdays or weekends, to regulate your body’s internal clock. Try shifting your bedtime 15-minutes closer to your preferred time each night (or take a few days to adjust to each 15-minute shift before adjusting again).

7. Sleep Duration + Quality:
- If you’re struggling to fall asleep for a while, get out of bed and come back to the mindfulness practices above (deep breathing, meditation, stretching, reading, tea, or any other practice that resonates with you).
- Track the number of hours you get each night, and notice the shifts as you implement these sleep hygiene tips.

The Problem with Too Much or Too Little Rest

⬆️ Too Much Rest
Let’s take a brief look back to the late 4th century when the Shaolin Monastery in China was founded. These Shaolin monks dedicated their lives to meditation and spiritual enlightenment. Unfortunately, focusing so much on meditation and stillness often left them physically weak and unable to properly defend their Monastery against attacks. As a result, around the year 527, they developed a self-defense practice to physically strengthen their bodies. This practice is called kung fu, with its roots in qigong.

They recognized the importance of balancing both body and mind for more integrated health and wellness.

⬇️ Too Little Rest
Coming back to today, especially in cultures that glorify productivity and constant action, phrases like "sleep is for the weak" or "I'll sleep when I'm dead” can (falsely) be seen as badges of honor. It’s no surprise that people commonly feel exhausted, worn down, and like they’re constantly just trying to keep up with day-to-day life.

☯️ Back to Balance
Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes balance between yin and yang, aligning with the natural cycles with ease and flow. In this context, rest/sleep is yin and action is yang.

In the Northern Hemisphere, we continue to move through winter, a time that emphasizes yin energy, a slowing down with the colder temperatures and earlier nightfall. Winter is peak time to nourish our foundation: kidneys, spine/bones, and brain. In doing so, we experience greater energy and vitality, as well as the ability to more deeply rest and feel restored.

Looking for yin support, vitality, and restoration? Join 1 (or more!) of 5 weekly qigong classes, with the next one tonight (Tues) at 7-8pm EST online. https://www.qigonghw.com/qigong-classes

Bear qigong draws inspiration from the bear's natural inclination to retreat into hibernation during winter to conserve energy and resources. This practice builds physical strength and coordination before then cultivating internal power with slow, controlled movements and visualization.

Our winter qigong flow also promotes kidney, spine/bone, and brain health, ultimately boosting vitality, deep rest, and restoration.

⚡From a physics standpoint, energy is the capacity to do work or produce change, manifesting in forms like kinetic, potential, and electromagnetic energy.

Our thoughts and words can be viewed as energy forms that create vibrational resonance, influencing water's molecular structure. Considering the human body is about 60% water, this has significant implications for our health. 💧

🧠Bring mindfulness to how you think or speak.
Do you more often use temporary patterns or identity patterns?
Temporary: “I am feeling insecure.” Identity: “I am insecure.”

➡️ If using disempowering language, temporary language allows for change and renewal and identity statements reinforce stagnation and depletion. When using empowering language, speak/think in identity statements: I AM CONFIDENT!

As we continue to move through winter and focus on the water element and kidneys from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, tuning into the connected emotions is also important.

Looking at the below emotional clues regarding your kidney health, what messages are you sending throughout your body with your thoughts and words? 🗣️

Recognizing that everything is energy empowers us to consciously create the life we desire. By aligning our thoughts, words, and actions with positive energy and empowerment, we create a healthier foundation, rooted in strength, confidence, and flow!

💧Have you heard of Dr. Emoto's Water Experiments?

Bridging the realms of physics and consciousness, Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto explored how emotions can influence the molecular structure of water. In the 1990s, he conducted experiments where he exposed water to various emotional stimuli: positive/negative thoughts, positive/negative words written on water containers, or harmonious/dissonant music. He then froze the water and examined the resulting ice crystals under a microscope.

Dr. Emoto discovered that water exposed to positive emotions formed symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing ice crystals, while water exposed to negative emotions produced asymmetrical and less appealing structures.

While his work has faced criticism for lacking scientific rigor and reproducibility, it serves as a powerful metaphor for the potential impact of our thoughts and emotions.

➡️Personal Note: I’m a big advocate for healthy skepticism.
What I share in my weekly emails and during qigong classes and special wellness events, etc. is an amalgamation of what I’ve learned from both formal education and the school of life, various medicines and styles of healing, and so on. Consider how this information fits into your understanding of the world and your experiences. As always, take what resonates with you and leave the rest!

Take Control of Your Health & Wellness

Have seen people needlessly suffer - and certainly having experienced it myself - I care deeply about providing opportunities, insight, and knowledge so that others may thrive, instead of just survive.

Over time, we've lost our connection with our internal world, instead focusing so heavily on circumstances and what's going on outside of us. For successful healing to occur, shifting our attention inward is critical. This journey begins with a willingness to look deeper into yourself and what's keeping you stuck. Also, with an openness to experiencing alternative healing methods - ones that have been utilized in China for thousands of years.

We are so powerful in creating our experiences. It's time to take back control of your health and wellness, achieved by learning ways to effectively hone the natural wisdom of your bodies and minds. Are you ready?
