Ostomy Travel Tips…
Summer vacation days are here, and many of you may be thinking about taking a trip. Regardless of where your destination might be, your ostomy should not interfere with your travel plans. Here are a few of our favorite travel tips:
• If you are flying, pack the majority of your supplies (and medications in their original bottles, unexpired) in your carry-on. We go even one step further and pack the majority of our supplies in our “personal item”. That way if they have to check your carryon on at the last minute, you’ll never be without your supplies.
• Pre-cut your waters so you will not need to carry scissors in your carry-on. Even though smaller blade scissors are allowed, you never know if rules will change.
• Pack twice as many supplies as you think you will need. You may be in a location where supplies are limited or not available.
• Keep an extra set of light-weight clothing on hand just in case you experience a leak.
• Try to obtain an aisle seat for easier access to the restroom.
• Empty your bag right before you get in the security line!!
• Remember to stay hydrated! When flying, we bring our individual electrolyte packets with us and fill up an empty water bottle (or buy a bottle of water) after we get through security.
