Enhancing Communication, LLC is very excited to introduce Lily Vedder, an amazing Speech-Language Pathologist, to the team!!!! 🎉

She will be working with our clients and families during after school hours and providing services in the school setting. We are so ecstatic to have you join us, Lily Rockwell!

⭐️Here is a little introduction to get to know her! ⭐️

"Hi! I’m Lily Vedder! I have been an SLP for 7 years now – 1 year working with birth to three-year old's and 6 years also working in a preschool. I love using nursery rhymes and themes in my therapy sessions. I have taken a training in the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and also the speech generating program Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP). I am excited to be working with Enhancing Communication to help provide customized in-home (or in-school) speech and language services. I hope to grow my expertise in alternative and augmentative communication. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in my garden, processing what comes out of the garden, and time with my dog and husband. We look forward to attending a Mud Hens game or two before the season is over."

WELCOME LILY!!!

I got to join these amazing women last Friday and share my journey to private practice. These UT students had some really great questions too! Maybe I got to inspire a few future SLPs too. 😊

I certainly love what I do and love sharing my story to becoming my own boss! 😁

My Myo Journey continues with a consultation with a local Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Some observations:

🔺I have a crossbite

🔺My hard palate is not as severe in how narrow and vaulted (high) as compared to more severe cases, so that is some good news!

🔺My molars are tipped out towards my check which is from my tongue pressing those outward

🔺My maxilla (upper jaw) is not as developed as we would want

Options:

🔺SARPE - Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion

🔺Full upper and lower jaw surgery

It was recommended that I start with the SARPE which will expand my upper jaw, and work with my orthodontist to adjust my teeth and direct my treatment through expansion.

Typically, there are 3 main symptoms after SARPE which include bleeding, swelling and numbness. We discussed why these occur and other uncommon risks/symptoms post-surgery.

*TIP: Always have paper and a pen to write down notes during these consultations. There is a lot of information discussed and it’s helpful to have notes to review afterwards as you digest/process all of the information before making a decision. 📝

If I find that I have good results with just the SARPE, I may not need to consider any further surgeries.

I’m going to do some reading, thinking, and talking with my fellow professionals before coming to a decision.

NEXT STEPS:

🔺Find a release provider for my tongue and lip who has experience with posterior tongue ties

🔺If moving forward with SARPE - determine the best time to do this. I will need to take 2 weeks off from being an SLP.

I’ll keep you posted in my journey!

Happy FRIDAY!!!

Some children I have worked with have difficulty maintaining a good seal with their lips. I notice this when I ask them to fill their cheeks full of air and then hear air leak out.

I usually say in a silly way, "Oh no! You have a leak!" and show them my exaggerated squeaky leak with my lips. This always gets a good laugh.

But we don't want there to be a leak of air through our lips.

So, for fun this weekend, have your child try to fill their cheeks full of air and hold it for a few seconds. Make sure they don't spring a leak!

I sometimes call it a chipmunk face since we are going to fill up our cheeks like a chipmunk does with nuts and seeds. I show them with my own cheeks and let them try it out next.

You can do this in front of a mirror or use you camera to show them their silly chipmunk face.

For more of a challenge, try moving the air from your cheeks to your upper lip! Then, move it down to your lower lip. See if you can move the air around from the cheeks to the upper lip without a leak.

*Did you try doing this by the end of the post??? 😁 How did it go?

Have a wonderful weekend! Have FUN!

02/11/2022

I know it's been a little while, but here is my first update of my Myo Journey.

I met with my orthodontist to review some diagnostics he completed in January.

🔺Some good news, my airway looks pretty good - no restrictions to cause any issues with breathing.

🔺My hard palate (the roof of my mouth) is pretty narrow and doesn't allow for my tongue to fit without touching/pressing against my teeth. We discussed various options for expansion which will be on hold while we get input from an oral surgeon to determine what is truly possible with surgical expansion and if the benefits would be worth the risks of surgery.

🔺 Based upon the findings/scans, there isn't too much work to be done with my teeth to work on the proper alignment and proper bite - so more good news.

Next steps:

1. Wait to hear back from the oral surgeon with input on surgical expansion.

2. Determine what professionals would be best to see next. For example - ENT and/or sleep study completed.

3. I'm also going to see an oral surgeon or other release provider to assess my lip and tongue tie since I know these are affecting many things (and have been for my lifetime).

That's what I have for you in my journey so far. It's not going to be a quick fix and it definitely involves an entire team to make sure we are addressing all the areas.

If you suspect you, your spouse, or child might have an orofacial myofunctional disorder, has speech sound difficulties, or swallowing difficulties - please reach out to Enhancing Communication for a consultation. This world of myofunctional therapy, airway space, and feeding has become a passion of mine and is driving what I want to do with my private practice.
