Slit lamps and chest tubes and disaster drills - oh my! Our new R2s had a blast learning from the best during their orientation. They practiced a variety of different procedures, simulated a disaster drill with an interdisciplinary team, and discussed important topics such as resident wellness and patient experiences. Although they really enjoyed getting to getting to know and work with off service residents intern year, we are all super excited to have them back in the department full time!

🎉 Intern orientation week was a wrap—and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome our newest EM interns! They kicked things off with sessions led by our PD Dr. Pedigo, APD & Ultrasound Director Dr. Singh, and chiefs Dr. & Dr. along with future MedEd & Ultrasound fellow Dr. ! 💥

We ran a quadruple treat learning station covering airways, ultrasound, central lines, and tabletop cases—then refueled with some 🔥 Chicken Maison. Let’s go, Class of 2028! 💪

We deeply appreciate the energy you always brought on shift. You had the ability to make the learning environment fun, inclusive, and filled with belly laughs.

☀️Senior Spotlight ☀️

Dr. Aslam Akhtar is one of our graduating seniors you probably have seen from a previous post winning an SAEM award.

Fun facts about him: he has a chicken coup and often gifts fresh eggs to coworkers, and a very famous mulberry tree that frequents the purple doc box filled for on shift snacking 🤤 (when in season of course)

During our graduation ceremony, he was “most likely to build a house in a day, grow mulberries, smoke meats for the entire residency and make it to green swing on time”.

You can (hopefully not) find him working in the South Bay local to where he grew up 🙂❤️ you will be missed!

Dr. Natalie Hernandez (PGY-4) was awarded the 2025 ADIEM Outstanding Future Academician Award from | she’s been an incredible DEI advocate, and educator while she’s served the South Bay as a resident. We’re excited to watch her career in education continue as she pursues a Med Ed fellowship at UCSF. You can catch her on EMRA cast () as she hosts various podcasts.
