The Central Valley of California is an area that is medically underserved, home to a large migrant farmworker population, many Latinos and immigrants. Many women here have to wait 18 months for minimally invasive surgeries like hysterectomy or myomectomy. Disparities in access to minimally invasive treatment options exist in gynecology. Black and brown women are more likely to undergo open/abdominal surgery for procedures like hysterectomy and myomectomy and are less likely to have access to high volume surgeons with expertise in minimally invasive techniques. This leads to increased morbidity like longer recovery times, hospital stays and higher rates of complications.

Starting this July, I will be joining the faculty at UCSF Fresno as one of two fellowship-trained Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeons. I will also serve as the Assistant Residency Program Director, helping shape the education of future generations of Ob/Gyns.

It would no doubt be so much easier for me to choose comfort and stay put. But I am motivated by a desire to merge service and advocacy for underserved communities and hopefully be a catalyst for change in a system that too often neglects those that are most vulnerable. Professionally speaking, to ascend to a position amongst the faculty in one of the top medical schools in the country is both a distinct honor and a career ambition fulfilled for me.

I have been so deeply touched by all the words of support and encouragement, especially from my patients, who I will miss SO much! I am grateful to my incredible staff, Maribel and Griselda (and Sam!), who have provided the utmost in care and attention to our patients - you have made this journey so worthwhile and have been vital to the success of our little practice. I’m thankful to all my amazing colleagues, and hospital staff - from admin to nurses to scrub techs to EVS workers, who I have been privileged to work with over the past decade in the South Bay and LA area.
Thank you all so much. 🤍
