Opinion| Our kids are watching: What Jacob Blake's shooting reveals about police trauma

“Calls to reform or abolish the police must be understood within this broader context — because the people directly and indirectly impacted by the harms of policing are not only the men and women we have painfully witnessed suffer in video after video, but also our children and teens.

The kids are watching. And we must begin to determine how we will provide them sanctuary. Because protecting children from police surveillance, brutality and violence is critical to their health and well-being.” Study after study has demonstrated the impact of police surveillance and violence on adult physical and mental health, but children are also affected — as victims and as witnesses.

Tariq Touré’s New Book Teaches Kids the Meaning of the Black Dollar

"David’s Dollar follows the story of David Kareem, a Muslim kid who expresses curiosity about what happens to a dollar after it’s spent. 'He’s happy to have his candy, but he’s sad to see his dollar be spent,' says Touré, who has three children himself. 'So his father says, ‘Well, let me show you,’ and then takes him around the neighborhood and shows him all the different businesses, and the dollar happens to keep popping up.'" West Baltimore native teaches financial literacy in illustrated story, ‘David's Dollar.’ 07/02/2020

Unique Ways to Keep Kids Busy This Summer — Janine Halloran

Check out this episode of the Calm & Collected podcast! A social distancing summer looks super different, right? Back in January, I had major plans to go to museums and take day trips with my kids. What is “The Talk” White parents should have with White children? This is not a talk about kindness in general, or the beauty of diversity, or how we can celebrate our differences, though those talks are also important. The talk I am speaking of is much harder for White parents to have. It is the truth about bias and racism and how we all have it. 05/31/2020

COVID-19 Disrupts Youth's Lives, Adds Layer to Trauma — Mayor's Office of Children and Family Success

“If you only focus on trauma informed care, you’re defining children, youth and adults by the worst moment in their life,” Dr. Kyla says. “So we take an approach of healing-centered engagement. We focus on how things happened, but we also focus on the strengths of communities and children. We say, ‘This happened to you, but you have gifts and we’re going to use those gifts to help you and others heal.’ It takes them from a role of being passive or a victim to having power and control.” Youth trauma in Baltimore City is pervasive: 42% of our children experience 3+ traumas before reaching adulthood. The massive disruption to young people’s lives caused by the coronavirus pandemic adds a layer of urgency to the healing that needs to happen among Baltimore’s youth—now.

Outdoor Afro

“Seeking out birds helps my kids sharpen their observational powers, gets them away from screens, and lets them bathe in nature when most of the day is spent indoors. Our bird walks not only give us something to search for when we’re outside, they may be helping my kids learn.”
