The New Year is often talked about as a higher-risk time for su***de, but the reality is more nuanced.
According to CDC data, su***de rates are actually lower in December and January. What does tend to rise during this season is emotional distress—post-holiday exhaustion, isolation, and the weight many people carry quietly that can build and lead to crisis.
In our latest blog, developed with insights from our Clinical Director Jessica Hillen and President Bruce Goldberg, we explore how targeted Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) tracks help identify distress early and provide timely, supportive intervention, especially for adolescents.
🎓 The blog also includes a free resource for school counselors:

January is Mental Wellness Month, a reminder that caring for our mental health is not a resolution, but a relationship we build with ourselves over time.
Last month, River’s Bend was proud to be part of the Michigan Presents event, where two powerful conversations took center stage:
🧠 Chantelle Thomas shared insight on navigating trauma and dissociation with compassion and awareness.
📱 Mike Jeffries explored the growing impact of social media addiction on mental health and emotional regulation.
These conversations matter, especially as we move through a month that can feel emotionally heavy for many.
🎥 The full presentations are now available on our website for anyone looking to learn, reflect, and grow.

Overwhelmed by post-holiday emotions? You’re not alone.
January can bring an emotional “crash” after weeks of social pressure, travel, and disrupted routines. In our new blog, Clinical Director Jessica Hillen shares her thoughts about why this is.
Jessica also breaks down why this month feels so heavy—and how we help people heal without shame.

🎆 Heading into the New Year? Stay safe. Stay self-aware. Stay connected.
New Year’s Eve can bring pressure—to celebrate, to drink, to “keep up.” But here’s the truth:
✅ You’re allowed to set boundaries around alcohol
✅ You’re allowed to say no to unsafe rides or situations
✅ You’re allowed to ask for help
If you’re concerned about your relationship with alcohol—or someone else’s—River’s Bend offers confidential Substance Use Evaluations led by state-certified clinicians.
🧠 This one-on-one process helps determine whether substance use has become problematic using ASAM & DSM-5 criteria, and what next steps, if any, are appropriate.
✨ Start the new year grounded in clarity and care.
