SPRING REINS of LIFE / Horses, Humans & Healing 501c3

SPRING REINS of LIFE / Horses, Humans & Healing 501c3 We provide equine-assisted psychotherapy for groups of trauma survivors in New Jersey.

Spring Reins of Life (SRoL) is a 501c3 volunteer run nonprofit organization. We utilize the international Eagala Model to provide EAP services in a group format for moderate/severe trauma survivors. Eagala EAP is solution focused and incorporates the assistance of horses guiding the therapeutic process toward emotional growth and healing. Our program is a team approach which includes licensed mental health professionals, certified equine specialists, and horses with capacity to work with individuals who are struggling with PTS(d). This is a ground-based modality as there is no riding involved and no previous horse experience required to benefit. Since opening our arena gates in 2012 our team of 2-legged and 4-legged professionals have helped thousands of trauma survivors in New Jersey find a place of peace. Our programming services are free of charge to groups of qualified candidates, please contact us for more information. Programming services are made possible through public and private funding. Additionally, SRoL partners with local organizations and nonprofits who also serve trauma survivors and want to incorporate EAP as part of the services available to their clients. Spring Reins of Life, has moved out of New Jersey!

Founded in 2012 and based in Hunterdon County (Central New Jersey) since, Spring Reins of Life, Inc. (SRoL) has provided equine assisted psychotherapy services to groups of trauma survivors including yet not limited to at-risk /high-risk adolescents, military veterans with PTSd/TBI, women / children victims of domestic violence/rape/violent crime, and more. For more than 15 years all our services have been provided for no cost or very low cost to participants thanks to public and private tax-deductible donations as well as grants and mental health partnerships.

Proudly and with honor we have served more than 3,300 trauma survivors in New Jersey to find a guided pathway towards peace and healing with the assistance of some incredibly powerful horses from 2012 to 2025. Our purpose at Spring Reins of Life is to provide solution-focused therapy for groups of trauma survivors and adverse life experiences where Horses lead the way toward personalized coping skills.

Spring Reins of Life has remained dedicated to promoting psychological healing, emotional well-being and personal growth using the skills of our equine specialists and licensed mental health professionals relying upon the intuitive and sentient guidance that horses can provide. The winter of 2020 presented milestones of accomplishment, putting the summer ahead as a bright and hopeful future for expansion.

Instead, on March 16, 2020, everything changed. (Rest in comments)

The organization has struggled since being shut down during the COVID19 pandemic. More recently this year, SRoL’s partner organization lost funding when their federal government funding was suddenly frozen or rescinded by DOGE. That led to the cancellation of several sessions of programing for Spring and Summer 2025, further hindering the operation after four long years were spent challenging us to return to normal.

Then in May 2025 as things were looking rather bleak, a longtime donor and supporter of SRoL’s Operation Horse (veterans programming) made an offer to provide a new home with a large amount of support and rebuilding of programming services located at an incredible equestrian center in Troy, Virginia (near Charlottesville). The move will provide more stability and expansion of services for SRoL in support of its mission.

While Spring Reins of Life is settling into Virginia, the New Jersey programs will be put on hold. There are plans to return to the Garden State into the future offering specialized and specific trauma recovery programs out of a satellite NJ location. In the meantime we are eager to meet and help Virginians.

Co-founder, Christiana Capra will remain as program director and equine specialist. The horses, Syriana and Junior Mif, and three donkeys Edith, Gloria and GusArchie arrived safely in Virginia and are settling in. Miss Molly and Chubby are staying in New Jersey for the foreseeable future.

The website will be updated and remain as, www.springreinsoflife.org. The new mailing address is Rolling Hills Farm, 353 Union Mills Road, Troy Virginia, 22974.

Meet our Donkey Kids! Gloria (daughter/sister) and GusArchie (son/brother). We were gifted a rescued from kill-pen auction a mother Donkey and her 5mo nursing baby jenny (Gloria) on Christmas Eve 2017. Later that spring we learned that another donkey was on the way. Edith momma gave birth to a jack donkey at 1:01AM on Sept. 24, 2018. GusArchie (Augustus Archibald) was born and almost did not survive that first night with us. He was not standing on his own and was not suckling. We could not get a vet here. Luckily one of farm residents had experience with foaling horses and came to our aid. Now baby Gussie will turn 7yo this coming September! Gloria will be 8yo in July (gotchadate 7/24). All three donkeys began working with clients here and there once GusArchie was weaned, and in 2022 they began working steadily. WHAT an AMAZING, Engaging, and truly a whole other level of Equid-Assisted therapy when adding the long-eared brethren to the mix. Now that we know what donkeys bring to the table of therapy for trauma recovery - we could never go back to not having donkeys help us.

Please donate to our page in the campaign as we do need support for the herd this year. DOGE indirectly froze the majority of our spring and summer programming funding and so we are in a space of needing funds to support the herd this summer. The donkeys have been attacked by ticks in the past month and we need to have then tested and if need be, treated for Lyme disease. Gloria is showing signs of intermittent lameness up front, and GusArchie is sleeping down a lot more than normal. Edith has become more secluded. Blood work averages $180 per test and basic treatment with antibiotics runs approximately $475-600 per animal. Please help.

This during our campaign we are honoring our Herd-members one at a time. For this weekend we want to spotlight Miss Molly. She is predominantly a VETERANS HORSE, by her own selection. She has a miraculous story and if interested we can share more. The short version is this - In September 2016 - A large palomino mare, rescued from the Kaufman Texas Kill-Ship Pens became November 2019, Miss Molly - Therapy Animal of the Year (NJ Dept of Veteran Affairs).

Miss Molly has an incredible, true, miraculous story to share! Mental Health Awareness Month. Both Spring Reins of Life and Miss Molly are advocating for the mental health of Veterans with PTSd in New Jersey and the need for funding and support of Operation Horse. We hope you enjoy learning Miss Molly's story and the healing power of horses to heal, and to be healed. In Molly's case she herself is a trauma survivor with PTSd and it was Veterans who opened the door to save her life, and she has returned the favor several times...Thank you, Miss Molly!

Horses that Heal Trauma...Why Horses?

Spring Reins of Life (SRoL) is a non-profit 501c3 organization. We are an EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) Model program offering Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) which incorporates the use of horses for therapeutic intervention toward promoting emotional growth and healing. Our program is a team approach featuring a licensed Mental Health Professional (MHP), a certified Equine Specialist (ES), and Horses specifically selected for their capacity to work with individuals who are troubled or suffering. We do not offer any riding or mounted work in our program. While there are many physical benefits to horseback riding, the EAGALA model is a solution focused base that enhances the emotional benefits of behavioral rehearsal and experiential component that is displayed when observing the horses in free will interacting with clients. Animal assisted therapy with horses combines the positive emotional effects gained from the human/horse bond with opportunities to challenge and explore one's thoughts and internal struggles during activities with an equine partner. It is a therapeutic intervention that defeats the stigma often associated with traditional counseling, but more importantly, it is an intervention that works. Spring Reins of Life provides services to those populations who have the least access to equine therapy yet are the same individuals who would derive the greatest benefit. Currently, we offer our services to veteran and youth trauma survivors. Namely combat veterans with PTSD, at-risk and high-risk teens, and young children in bereavement. We invite you to explore our website and learn more about our innovative and effective program promoting positive growth and healing. WHY HORSES: The size and power of the horse can be naturally intimidating to many people, this alone can create a perfect opportunity to overcome fear and learn confidence. To accomplish a task with the horses despite of these fears creates resilience and provides wonderful metaphors to fall back on when dealing with other intimidating or challenging situations in life. Horses are very much like humans in that they are social creatures and have very well defined roles within their herds. They would generally rather be with their peers. Horses have distinct personalities, attitudes and moods – what works well with one horse may not work at all with another. They like to have fun, they are curious, and are very expressive physically. Horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning. Horses have no agenda with us, no hidden motives. They simply reflect the strength of our character, our heart, our commitment, our internal congruence and our self-limiting perceptions and beliefs. Horses have a distinctly amazing ability to mirror and reflect the exact internal landscape of our intentions on a moment to moment basis derived from what our human body language is telling them. The horse’s willingness to trust humans arises out of their keen ability to read authenticity, silently measuring the coherence between our inner thoughts and outer actions. The horses pick up on what is actually happening internally with the humans and then will physically reflect this reality in a way for us to understand. The horse does not speak our words or listen to our convincing tone; they pay most of their attention to the part of us that is true and present at that moment. The horses are flexible in their perception because as the situation changes, so do they. For example, if you are angry and pretend not to be, the horse will only react to the anger that it sees. Change your internal state and you will see a different response in the horse. Within minutes a client is willing to trust and accept the feedback from the horse, as opposed to weeks or months with a human coach or therapist. This is because the client views the horse’s feedback as genuine and constructive and often will demonstrate a desire to achieve or embrace the situation for the horse’s sake.
