A great graph by Spine Care Partners and shared by the Primary Spine Provider Network! Common MRI findings in healthy PAIN-FREE individuals include: degenerative disc disease, disc bulges, disc height loss, bone spurs or osteophytes, facet arthritis, and more! There is also little to no correlation between severity of physical findings on imaging and complaints of pain or disability.

What does that mean? Medical Imaging and MRIs can be helpful in specific cases, but can often lead to fear, distress, unnecessary excessive medical intervention including shots and surgery, and avoidance of physical activity when the findings are not accurately communicated.

Takeaway? MOST adults will have some scary looking medical imaging when it comes to our spine and joints. Those findings are typically NORMAL and EXPECTED. Beware any provider who evaluates you with medical imaging ONLY (without putting their hands on your painful area and evaluating your movement) and starts talking about injections or surgery before offering conservative care first!!!

Check out Dr. Alfonso working with Marianne on gait and balance! An important part of staying independent with age includes being able to get in and out of chairs and on/off different surfaces with strength and confidence! Great work, Marianne!

Is cupping just some woo woo placebo intervention or does it actually do something? According to a meta analysis of RCTs (the highest level of evidence there is!), it has been shown to have significant positive impacts on pain and disability in those with lower back pain. We have also used cupping successfully in the clinic to help with myofascial pain and mobility impairments just about anywhere else in the body, including over surgical scars, healed c-section scars, over ITB pain, over the abdomen in people with menstrual cramps and pelvic pain, and more!

Now should cupping be a substitute for an active rehab plan and patient education? Of course not! It should be used as an adjunct in a comprehensive rehabilitation plan! It is also not for everybody nor is it always the best use of time with your therapist. Every patient and case is different.

When choosing a physical therapy practice to help you in your Rehab needs, look for one that is willing to create a targeted care plan for you, one that uses a number of interventions in case some don’t work for your body, and one that is willing to think outside of the box!

Just under 7 weeks until Full marathon #5 for me! What does training look like when you have two kids in school and sports, work full-time and own and run a business, amongst other things?…

Sometimes that looks like getting up at 4:30 to run 8 miles before getting ready for work. Sometimes it looks like 5 easy miles on a beautiful day or 8 miles of intervals in the pouring rain while you’re waiting for your kid to get through soccer practice. Sometimes that looks like 18 miles on the treadmill on a Sunday so you can be home for your kids to talk to while you sweat and pant in response. Or hop off the belt for a few minutes to grab your kid a snack.

And WHY do I do this, you ask? …

I want to show myself and my kids that I can set goals and work hard to achieve them. Some days, a long run is the only thing keeping me together. For my sanity. For my health. To clear my mind. To feel like a badass. Because most days it’s the only thing I do “just for myself.” Some days I just can’t do it and that’s okay. But when I get back to it again, I never regret it.

What’s your version of marathon training? Whatever it is… Do it for yourself because you need it and you deserve it!
