You will want to pay attention to this one, trust us!

Late winter into early spring (February to March/April) is skunk breeding season which means they are on the move! We want to give you all a little heads up on how to avoid an unwanted interaction and/or tips on how to 'deskunk'.

If you find yourself face to face with a skunk, the best course of action is to remain calm, stand still, and slowly back away; avoid sudden movements as this could startle the animal and trigger it to spray. They usually will give you several warning signs before spraying.

If a skunk does spray, here is a recipe to help:
1. Catch the animal (or person!) don't let them roll or rub on anything!
2. Do NOT wet the animal or area.
3. BLOT the area that was sprayed with paper towel, do not rub or smear.
4. Make a paste made up of: 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap, 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup baking soda. Spread it on the patient and let sit for 10 mins.
5. Wash with soap and water, repeat if needed.

If the skunk sprays a human or hairless animal, leave out the baking soda. The baking soda acts as an exfoliant and can be abrasive to the bare skin.
