You don't have to choose between healing and holidays.

At Sabino, we believe healing shouldn't come at the cost of connection. That's why Thanksgiving and Christmas are the real thing.

Chef Rob goes all out with Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Family and friends are invited to campus to share those moments with clients. And the people in treatment get to experience the holidays the way they're meant to be: surrounded by good food, meaningful connection, and genuine celebration.

Healing is for everyone. That’s why our pool is intentionally designed with a 5 ft depth for those less confident in the water, and a shallow end built for wheelchair access.

Because making everyone feel welcome and included isn’t just something we say, it’s woven in everything we do.

Meet Star!

Our beautiful Tennessee Walker stands tall at 16 hands (the official measurement for horses) and brings just as much heart to her therapy work as she once did to trail endurance. Since joining Sabino in 2022, Star has become a gentle guide in group, individual, and EMDR equine therapy.

An important aspect of the healing process is involving the families of our clients.

During family therapy sessions, families engage with a therapist to learn new communication strategies, understand each other’s experiences, and implement healthy boundaries. This collaborative approach allows family members to better support each other and facilitate positive change for life after the treatment facility.

Treating substance issues without treating the underlying trauma can be like pulling weeds without removing the roots. They might keep coming back up.

In programs that only focus on the symptoms, that can happen. At Sabino, we flip the script. We start with treating the trauma because sometimes it's what is underneath anxiety, depression, substance use, and so many other struggles people face.

Our approach is simple but uncommon: heal the root, and watch what happens to everything growing from it. It's about understanding what drives certain behaviors and healing from there.

Here's what happens on the adventure course:
Your hands grip the climbing wall. Your heart rate picks up. Doubt creeps in. And then you take the next step anyway.

Our experiential therapy program uses physical challenges to help clients work through the psychological ones. Rock climbing builds confidence by proving you can handle fear and keep going. The cargo bridge teaches trust because you literally need others to help you balance. Jacob's Ladder requires communication and teamwork to move upward together. Floating tires force you to adapt and problem-solve in motion.

Every step teaches you what you're actually capable of.

What physical activity has helped you mentally or emotionally? Drop a comment.

Ever notice how you react to certain situations in ways that don't quite make sense, even to you?

That's often attachment trauma showing up. Not the big, dramatic kind you might expect, but the subtle patterns formed in early relationships that still shape how you connect, trust, and regulate emotions today.

NARM (NeuroAffective Relational Model) therapy helps you work with those patterns without having to relive painful memories. Instead of diving back into the past, NARM explores how early experiences show up in your present-day life.

It's body-centered and relational, working with five core developmental themes: connection, attunement, trust, autonomy, and love.

At Sabino, NARM fits naturally with our trauma-first approach because it addresses the roots, not just the behaviors.

Healing isn’t about rushing to the finish line. It’s about honoring each step forward. At Sabino Recovery, we remind our clients that even the smallest progress is worth celebrating. Every day closer to wholeness matters.

Meet Shorty: former roping champion, current professional greeter, permanent "Big Dog" energy.

This Quarter Horse spent his early years competing, but these days he's living his best life at Sabino. His responsibilities now include taking clients on desert trail rides, stopping for spontaneous breaks, and offering gentle head nudges when he senses someone needs one.

Unlike many equine therapy programs that focus only on groundwork, clients at Sabino actually ride. Shorty's the perfect partner for that. He's patient, present, and has an intuitive sense for meeting people exactly where they are.

The nickname "Big Dog" suits him. Because when a horse greets you like a golden retriever and somehow always knows when you need him, what else would you call him?

Why do we have a stone labyrinth? Well, getting lost is actually the point.

Our stone labyrinth is a walking path that our clients use to ground themselves, process emotions, or simply clear their heads between therapy sessions. Some go slow. Some go barefoot. Some walk it multiple times. There's no right way to do it, which is kind of the whole point.

It's walking meditation without the pressure of doing it "correctly." Just one foot in front of the other.

Meet Susan Love, our new Lead Therapist!

Susan brings deep expertise in trauma treatment and a passion for getting to the root cause, not just managing symptoms.

She's trained in Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), EMDR, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), trauma-informed care for eating disorders, and much more! Susan's philosophy is simple but powerful: healing can't happen without safety first. She's spent years specializing in the intersection of trauma, dissociation, and eating disorders, always focused on root causes rather than symptoms.

In her downtime, Susan enjoys spending time with her 3 dogs and 2 horses, as well as family and friends. She can often be found loving on her animals, soaking up the sun, attending sporting events, reading a book, or on a quest to find the next best dish or dessert in Tucson.

Show her a warm welcome by liking this post and commenting your favorite book so we can pass her some great recommendations!
