Remember the Frankenstein movies? The basic premise is mad scientist Dr. Frankenstein creates a living creature from dead people parts, creature is feared and mistreated, it rampages and kills, people trap and kill the creature, the end. With that in mind, I bet my next statement will surprise you. You have a Frankenstein’s creature in you, as do I.
I know of our emotional brain and its emotional center: the Limbic System; I’m a Trauma Therapist. Let’s call it Limby for short. Limby controls fight-flight-freeze.
You’re talking, a worry pops up, and you miss what the other person said. An unexpected touch and you jump. A certain smell and memories appear. All Limby. Limby is powerful and misunderstood. Limby may misinterpret situations, and Limby can seem like our enemy. I think you get where I’m going. Limby is our Frankenstein’s creature.
When a 3-year-old child is frightened by a dog, Limby might create a fear of all dogs, deciding to fear all dogs is safest and best for survival. That said, you can change Limby’s choices. You can interrupt and even prevent fight-flight-freeze. You can teach Limby, for example, that one dog in one situation does not mean fear all dogs. Substitute for “dog” your stress, fear, busy mind, sleepless nights, tension source. Limby makes no distinctions.
