Happy New Year to All!

I wish you the happiest of New Years and may your heart be full of hope for a happy and healthy 2022 for you and your loved ones. We have so much to look forward to as we are all able to experience a world where we are on the tail end of the Covid Pandemic and opening our personal world to traveling, being with our friends and family face-to-face, and hugging each other more and more!

That's my New Year's Resolution... TO HUG SO MUCH MORE TO MAKE UP FOR THE MONTHS THAT WE COULDN'T HUG! Do you make New Year's Resolutions? If so, please feel free to write them here and I wish you the very best in accomplishing them in 2022!!!

Merry Christmas to All! 🎄 ✨

What a wonderful holiday for all of us to give presents, share our love for each other, sing carols, and make memories! My fondest memories of growing up in Ohio are my mother’s white flocked Christmas tree with blue bulbs and white lights. My parents would send us down to the neighbors on Christmas Eve evening and when we came back, Santa had come! My siblings and I were oh-so excited and we were blessed with lovely gifts like bicycles, ice skates, new pajamas, etc. Our house was filled with laughter and joy, plus lots of singing and music, as my mother would play Christmas songs on the piano.

Above all, the next day we would all bundle up and attend Mass. All 7 of us would crowd into the car and attend church as it was a day for us to thank Jesus for being born and being our Savior! I can still see the church, hear the music and singing, and feel excited to get back home to play with our gifts.

I hope that all of you have a very Merry Christmas today and if you have your elderly loved ones with you, see that they are a part of the joy and celebration! Maybe you can sit down with your Grandma, Grandpa, Auntie, and Uncle to ask them about Christmases of their past! They love talking about their youth! God bless you all and Merry Christmas!

If your loved one is in a nursing home, assisted living home, or independent living, you can make their Christmas a joyous experience at their chosen home. As adult children, it is sometimes difficult when our parents are far away in a safe and comfortable home and due to their mental or physical circumstances, they can't leave to share the holidays with you. Here are some tips to make it joyful for the both of you!

1. Ask the facility management team if they will help you set up a holiday Zoom time for you all to laugh, share and spread love!
2. Have your children make sweet cards and send them to your loved one and maybe some more for their friends.
3. Sponsor a movie, singers, or a party and send wrapped goodies for them to enjoy!
4. Send their favorite flowers, holiday treats, or a soft pair of slippers to bring cheer!

Seeing your relatives during the holidays may be a time that warms your heart as you create new, special memories together, however this is also a time for you to consider how they've been living if you haven't seen them in a while. As you spend time with them, take notice of changes in their mobility, organization, memory, mood, and general quality of life. Sparing some thought for their well-being during this family time can be crucial in determining when they may need more assistance in their lives.

We are truly embarking on a holiday season like we have never had! It is a blessing that many of us are able to be together indoors as we are getting vaccinated, following our Covid guidelines and making choices to keep our loved ones and elderly neighbors safe. Be kind, be patient and be understanding of their needs and feelings.

Some days are great for them and others are extremely difficult as they reflect on memories of loved ones who have passed. Be cognizant that depression can be more prominent now than in other months prior. Some tips during this season for your Elder friends are:

1. Give them the grace to stay home if they are concerned about Covid.
2. Make a plan with them to bring them a holiday meal they love.
3. Wrap a present that they would love.
4. "Grandpad" is a wonderful gift to help loved ones stay connected with family and friends!

My father got really sick a couple of years ago. He was misdiagnosed (it was complicated). However, I jumped in as his advocate and made sure he got the treatment he needed.

Once he was discharged, my mother was left to take care of him at home and she was completely overwhelmed with everything she had to do for him. Again, I jumped in and arranged everything, simplified what needed to be done and relieved her of unnecessary stress so that she could spend more time just being with him. My mother also had me to call with any questions that arise during his recovery.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!

May your day be full of love, laughter, joy, and great food, especially desserts! I love to make my Grandma Rohyans' jello dish every Thanksgiving. It makes me think of her and it is delicious! I hope that you have a delicious table full of your favorites.

Remember to be thoughtful of your older adult family members. Here are some more hints to make their day special…

1. Look at family photo albums.
2. Revive old family traditions.
3. Keep your loved one involved.
4. Enjoy the moment
5. Help them get ready and make it special
6. Ask if they want to help with anything, like setting the table, etc.

As a Care Manager, I can assist in designing the best visit for your elderly loved ones by creating a care plan for the time with caregivers, setting up the bedroom so it is safe for them, having medical equipment set up prior to their visit, and more. It is always best to be prepared for any event. Showing your love by being prepared is a special gift to you and your loved one.

So BLESSED to be on the Board of Directors of this Independent Senior Living Home, Covenant House for the Elderly!! We worked together today to make Thanksgiving meals to be delivered to their doors. It was such a treat to be able to bring joy to these folks!! If you have any questions about this home feel free to ask me and I am happy to help make application.
