Southern Arizona Placement and Referral Alliance

Southern Arizona Placement and Referral Alliance We are the Southern Arizona chapter of NPRA. We strengthen ethical standards, unite professionals, and support families navigating senior care.

We educate, connect, and advocate for quality, transparency, and Family Choice in every placement. The Senior Placement & Referral industry remains largely unregulated, without mandatory licensing or oversight by a governing body. Families often ask, “How do we find a reputable agency to help us through the challenging process of finding a home for our senior or disabled loved one?”

NPRA (National Placement & Referral Alliance) steps in to provide guidance and standards by:

- Defining a clear scope of practice for the Senior Referral Industry across the country.
- Establishing, promoting, and advocating for minimum ethical standards and best practices.
- Providing resources to help families find senior referral providers who adhere to NPRA's high standards of conduct. NPRA’s Best Practices ensure that placement professionals operate with integrity, providing families the confidence to make informed decisions. Our members voluntarily uphold these standards to protect, educate, and serve the public, fostering trust in senior living placements.

November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month 🍂🕊️🌷

This year’s theme, “We See the Whole You,” honors the teams who care for every part of a person’s story—body, mind, and spirit. To every hospice and palliative care professional: thank you for the compassion you bring to our community.

We’d also like to highlight SoAPRA board members Stephanie Dabdoub and Nydia Navarro with Casa de la Luz for the wonderful work they do, exemplifying this mission every day through their dedication and heart.

👉 Let’s continue to support and uplift each other in our efforts!

As we enter a season defined by gratitude and giving, we also recognize that many families are experiencing food insecurity. To help support those in need, our community is collecting non-perishable food items now through December 31. And thanks to Grace Management, Inc., every donation will be matched pound for pound (up to 100 pounds) to extend the impact even further.

Thank you to our residents, families, associates, and partners for joining us in this important effort. Together, we can help fill plates and hearts this holiday season. 💜

We had our November meeting tonight, hosted by Broadway Proper Retirement Community. Thank you to Breanne and Brittany for the beautiful food and the incredible service!

We had an great showing to attend! We are always excited to have new attendees and new members.

Our speakers tonight were from Adultcare Assistance Homecare, Krystal Wilkinson and from Fleming & Curti, PLC, Debora Luna, Erika Bertoldo and Norman Roundy. They were such a good panel! They answered all the questions thoroughy and thoughtfully. We are always amazed at the new information that can be provided. And we provide CEU’s for those who attended.

Our Senior Living Giving Tree had a wonderful night as well! Four of the five seniors have been adopted by Kevin Merkel, Tuyen Johnston, MSW, Sabrina Modrzejewski, Navarro and @ Natalie Martinovich! We can’t thank you enough for your support!

Member Spotlight: Shelly Hoffman 💖

We’re proud to highlight one of our dedicated SoAPRA members, Shelly Hoffman!

Her journey in senior care is truly inspiring:

"After my mother passed away, I moved into her place, which was in a 55+ retirement park. I was the baby of the park and just barely 55. I learned quickly to love the seniors all around me. They love to have fun and manage to stay busy despite most of them being retired. When I started looking around for a business to start after retirement, I found the placement business intriguing, and I would be helping a group of people that I had grown to love. As I learned about how vulnerable some of the people there are, I decided that I wanted to do things right. When I learned about the ethics of SOPRA, I knew I wanted to join. People deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. I desire to help seniors find places to live that will provide them with the care, support, and dignity that they need. It is at the heart of what I do."

I would like to share an initiative from SoAPRA aimed at supporting seniors in assisted living and memory care during the holiday season. This is our first inaugural Senior Living Giving Tree. Recognizing the particular challenges of isolation for these individuals, we have adopted The Ranch Estates of Tucson, a member of SoAPRA, for this year's holiday outreach.

At our upcoming two events, November and December, we will provide a list of seniors who do not have family and are in need of support. This presents a meaningful opportunity to contribute to making their Christmas as joyful as possible.

It is our hope to continue this wonderful event annually, so if you are interested in your community being selected next year, please join the SoAPRA membership today!

Our next event is November 18, 2025 @ 3:30, please join us!

🇺🇸 Veterans Day Recognition: Celebrating Sheri and Rob Lewin

On this Veterans Day, SOAPRA is proud to recognize one of our dedicated board members, Sheri Lewin, and her husband, Rob Lewin, for their remarkable commitment to service.

Together, the Lewins share more than 35 years of combined military service in the U.S. Air Force. As a multi-generational military family, they dedicated their lives to serving our nation, operating across seven states, two countries, and participating in numerous deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Beyond their service, Sheri currently volunteers as SOAPRA's Social Media Director. Professionally, they co-own Assisted Living Locators of Tucson. Their deep passion for supporting senior citizens aligns perfectly with the core mission of SOAPRA.

The Lewins are also proud parents to four children and two grandchildren, and have called Tucson home for over nine years.

We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Lewins for their military service, their continued commitment to our community, and their unwavering support of SOAPRA.

To all veterans, past and present, thank you for your service.

🌿 Wisdom Wednesday:

What Ethical Placement Really Means

Anyone can recommend a senior community.

Ethical advisors walk beside families until they find home.

This is what ethical placement truly means — and it’s the foundation of every NPRA and SoAPRA member’s work.

🌟 Member Monday Spotlight: Tuyen Johnston, MSW
Meet Tuyen Johnston, a compassionate social worker dedicated to supporting older adults and their families through some of life’s most challenging transitions. With a Master’s in Social Work and years of experience in senior care, Tuyen brings empathy, insight, and practical guidance to every family she serves. Her deep understanding of the emotional and logistical complexities of aging makes her an invaluable advocate in our community.

💬 “As a former hospital discharge planner, I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming it can be for families to navigate senior living options on their own. It’s why I believe so strongly in ethical, qualified placement professionals—and why being part of SoAPRA matters. We need to protect seniors by ensuring they’re guided by people who truly understand their needs and care about their outcomes.”

We’re so proud to have Tuyen as part of the SoAPRA family—her heart for service and advocacy truly reflect the spirit of our mission! 💛

🎃 Happy Halloween from SoAPRA! 👻

Today’s about costumes, candy, and a little bit of spooky fun—but it’s also a reminder of the joy and connection we see every day in senior care.

Whether it’s a resident lighting up at a costume parade, a caregiver bringing treats to a memory care wing, or a family finding peace of mind through compassionate support… this season reminds us that magic happens in the moments.

🧡 To all the professionals, partners, and families who make this work so meaningful—thank you. You’re the real treat.

Stay safe, stay warm, and don’t forget to smile at the skeleton on your porch.
