September 9 is National African Immigrant and Refugee HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Awareness Day (NAIRHHA Day). Founded by advocates in Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and New York, NAIRHHA Day has been observed annually on September 9 by communities, advocates, healthcare professionals, government officials, and other stakeholders since 2014. The purpose of NAIRHHA Day is to bring national and local attention to the HIV and viral hepatitis needs of African immigrants living in the U.S. in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. By addressing some of the unique issues that African immigrants in the U.S. face through awareness, education, and resources, NAIRHHA Day helps to eliminate the pervasive stigma surrounding HIV and hepatitis in these communities and empower individuals within these communities to take charge of their health by encouraging screenings, treatment, and hepatitis B vaccination.

August 25, 2024, is National Faith HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NFHAAD). NFHAAD is a day to engage faith communities to work together for HIV/AIDS education, prevention, treatment, care, and support, and to reduce and eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Faith communities are encouraged to learn about the status of HIV funding in their state, nationally, and internationally, and take action to sustain and increase HIV prevention, treatment, and care services for all who require them. Faith communities fighting for freedom and fairness together can end HIV-related stigma and discrimination—one day, each year, until there is a cure!

Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) is August 20. Founded by the Southern AIDS Coalition. SHAAD is a day that individuals, communities, and organizations can unite to call attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the South.

This year’s theme, “Power to the People!”, is meant to be a reminder of the immense power in one’s voice, one’s history, one’s joy, one’s dollar, and one’s vote. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
