The first question doulas often get asked is, "Like a midwife, right?"

No, a doula is not the same thing as a midwife, and here are the differences:

Midwives:
👉 Are healthcare providers
👉 Are responsible for yours and your baby's health
👉 Performs clinical tasks such as checking dilation, blood pressure, heart rate, and also diagnoses issues and treats them
👉 Meets with you regularly from the start of your pregnancy
👉 Ensures your baby is safely delivered

Doulas:
👉 Provide physical, emotional, and educational support
👉 Does not perform clinical tasks of any kind
👉 Meet with you once or twice before the birth
👉 Help encourage communication with your provider
👉 Help you know your options, but don't tell you what choices to make

Another question that is often asked is, "If I have a midwife, do I need a doula, too?"

The answer is YES!

While a midwife can do many of the things a doula does, her first priority is your safety and the safety of the baby, and a doula is an irreplaceable member of your birth team!
