Juniper Final Update:

This is not how I wanted this journey to end. But sometimes the hero just needs to rest.

Juniper fought so so hard and for so long. He beat the odds so many times. But yesterday, on the way to the emergency vet in Sacramento, I saw the fight leave him. He was exhausted.

His poor lungs were so full of mucus he wasn't being able to get enough air. And even if we were able to afford to take him to a specialist to get the lungs flushed, he likely would have succumbed to the anesthesia. Even if we kept him on oxygen until his appointment with his regular vet monday, the feeding tube wouldn't do anything for him if he couldn't breathe.

So, I made the absolutely soul crushing decision to let him go. To let him rest.

Im devastated, angry, and struggling to process this sweet soul I've been caring for for hours a day for the past 16 weeks is gone.

The only thing that gives me some solace is knowing now he is resting. And I hope whatever lizard heaven looks like that there are plenty of sun soaked rocks to lounge on, and the softest blankets to cuddle in. And all the food he could possibly want.

If the person who abandoned him is reading this: I want you to know your lack of research before getting him and decision to leave him to fend for himself put him through more suffering than any one living thing should EVER have to go through. I want you to live with that knowledge, and I hope it sits heavy on your shoulders. And I hope to God you never get another animal.

Thank you to all who donated towards his care and feeding tube, you have no idea how much that meant to me. Since the outcome was not as expected, feel free to message me if you would like your donation back, I will not be offended or judge.

Thank you all again. I'm going to go sit in the sun for a bit and try to start healing from this. Rest in Paradise Juni, you deserved so much better.

Juniper Update (Buckle up, this is a long one)

*For anyone new here: I took on a black and white tegu (large lizard) that was abandoned and seems to have been out on its own in my neighborhood in the Sierra Nevada foothills for quite sometime. Someone found him living under their firewood pile back in July and called me.

I have been taking care of him since then, have spent close to 1k on building him a beautiful custom enclosure, have spent close to 3k total on care for him including vet bills, gas to go to the vector counties away, health related equipment, supplements, and specilized food trying to get him back to health, and have invested SO much time I have lost count.

Up until a month ago he was eating pretty good and drinking pretty good. When he came to me he had several scabbed wounds (two somewhat large ones under his jaw), had what sounded like a mild RI, evidence of MBD, evidence of broken tail, layers of stuck shed, and was extremely emaciated and dehydrated.

The vet said he is likely stunted and is incredibly malnourished, but had a solid chance of survival and looked generally better off than he had expected. The vet wanted to hold off on the antibiotics for the assumed RI until he gained more weight, and his kidneys had a chance to recover from the severe dehydration.

**Most recent update for those who have been following:

We started the antibiotics up mid August and he suddenly got really bad. Mouth breathing, clicking noises in his throat, he stopped eating solids, started spitting water up from his glottis, has had change in his stool consistancy (did find pin worm eggs, will be adressing that on Monday 10/13 during a recheck), and he is far less active than prior. I've been keeping him warm to keep him from brumating as directed to do from the vet, and I don't think he is trying to brumate.

At this point he has stopped eating anything but liquids (Mostly ReptiBoost and Critical Care Carnivore), is not wanting to drink much water, is losing the weight he managed to put on, and overall just seems to be going downhill.

Vet work that I have had done includes:

-Blood work which showed elevated uric acid (we assumed from dehydration)

-IV fluids

-Two vitamin B injections

-Checked mouth for teeth issues (none)

-F***l test (came back negative for anything) I since this have found pinworm eggs using a UV light I had when I was checking stool for blood.

-Xrays that indicated possible pneumonia and backed up stool

-I've been giving him injection antibiotics the last two months

-An as-needed stool softener

-A twice a day nebulizer antibiotic for the last month in addition to the injection

-Once a day nebulized mucus medication

At home treatments I've been doing as supplemental care:

-Warm soaks

-Electrolyte soaks

-Letting him bask in the sun when warm enough to do so

-Betadine soaks when he gets too aggressive with trying to get stuck shed off

-Offering water twice a day in addition to his water bowl in his enclosure

-Keeping his temps and humidity consistent and warm

-Belly massages to help with backed up stool.

The vet said the next thing to try is a feeding tube, which I am concerned about trying because I worry he won't wake up from the anesthesia. But at this point am feeling like I have to at least try. They would also check his throat for any internal issues, as the xray didn't show any blockages but it almost seems like he is struggling to swallow. In addition to this, I would like to get him tested for cryptosporidium, adenavirus, and many other things, which is another big expense as they require overnight shipping for PCR DNA tests. I also am going to have to bring him back to have the feeding tube removed which I assume will be in the same pricing ball park.

I took him on with the understanding that he was in not great shape but that the outlook was promising. At this point I've spent a lot more than I anticipated, but I did know that it was a risk.

If anyone feels compelled to help this sweet guy, I would be so eternally grateful! I don't know that he is going to make it if we don't do this, and I have no idea if he would make it through this either. But I feel like I have to try something.

And please be kind, I have literally been pouring my heart and soul into helping this guy, I have done everything I am able to thus far within my power. It is so frustrating and unfair that people get these kinds of animals that are incredibly hardy, decide they don't want them, they get to big, or don't want to care for them and just abandon them. Almost always there is someone else that ends up taking them on. And generally those people care too much, get too emotionally and financially invested, and often times have to make hard decisions in the end. I don't usually take on rescues but this guy was special.

Thank you again to everyone who made it this far and/or donates to this sweet guys care!

Hoping to try to raise 500, but anything extra would be a huge blessing right now.

Im not a fan of using GoFundMe, but can if that would be easier for some folks.

Think rattlesnakes are terrifying creatures ready to strike?

Let's bust some myths and discover the truth!

Did you know that rattlesnakes are actually quite shy and prefer to avoid humans? They only strike when they feel threatened.

In fact, these fascinating reptiles play a crucial role in controlling rodent populations.

So next time you encounter one, remember: they're not out to get you, they're just minding their own business.

Learning about these misunderstood creatures can help us coexist safely and respectfully!

If you ever wondered what pure happiness looks like for a blue-tongued skink, this is it!

Slinky absolutely lives for blueberries, so this is my favorite form of enrichment to give her.

The moment she smells them, nothing else matters. Seeing her this excited during feeding time is the best part of my lizard care routine. Just look at that happy face and messy snoot!

✨️Juniper the Abandoned Tegu Update✨

️First off, thank you to everyone that's been so supportive. This whole year has been quite the emotional roller coaster for me, and Juniper has been a highlight but also, at times, a stressor, and honestly, the support has been amazing from you guys! From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Juni's vet appointment went waaaay better than I expected, and he is home! He apparently has pneumonia, with slight fluid in his lungs.

I did have X-rays done; I wanted to make sure there was nothing else critically wrong internally. Mostly, I wanted to verify that there was nothing blocking his airway or throat and that everything internally was developed correctly, considering he has Metabolic Bone Disease. If there was something more drastically wrong internally, I didn't want to prolong his suffering.

Everything looked good, except his lungs have some fluid and mucus evident, and he has some stool backed up, which could explain why he hasn't been wanting to eat. There is evidence he has broken his tail in the past; I had kind of figured that since it is kinked in some spots and considering the weakness in bones from MBD, plus the fact that these guys whip their tail as a main defense, it makes sense. I had also had concerns that he may have broken his back at some point, as his posture is generally kind of curved and the way he walks is still not improved. There was evidence of his lower spine above the tail being thicker in one area, but to my understanding, it would be hard to know the cause.

His vet seemed overall positive about him being able to recover, so long as I am able to keep him from going into brumation.

To clarify why I was so concerned, I have always had birds and mostly arid reptile species. In those guys, when you see stuff like this, that typically means the worst. So when I saw him spitting water up from his glottis, my heart sank and my brain went full-blown red alert.

He is by no means out of the woods yet, but not on death's door as I had thought. The vet sent him home with a new antibiotic that needs to be nebulized once a day, a medicine to break up the mucus for the nebulizer twice a day, and a stool softener to help get the blockage out. Nebulizing a lizard has been added to the top 20 list of weirdest things I've ever done, but I would do anything for this little guy. He honestly seems to like the nebulizer; I was expecting it to be more of a challenge to get him to accept it, but he just sat there, eyes closed and chilling.

He certainly likes to keep me busy, lol! I'm just so glad he is relatively okay.

Also, I want to send a huge shout-out and massive thank you to the Upper Ridge Veterinary Care staff and Dr. Billuni for the amazing care Juniper has received from them! I couldn't ask for a better veterinary care team! Highly, highly recommend them!

Following my passion has led me to this sweet moment. I am always in awe of animals that even after being broken and abandoned, learn to love and trust again.

This incredible, inteligent animal was neglected and abandoned by a human. Yet, when I let her out of her enclosure to stretch her legs, this is how she chooses to spend her time instead.

Looks like I'm stuck for a bit, but thats ok. She deserves the peace.
