Mental Health Awareness in the Magic Valley
Mental health affects all of us—our families, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.
In the Magic Valley (Twin Falls & surrounding counties), residents are reporting poor mental health at rates on par with the rest of Idaho. But here’s the concern: Idaho ranks among the top states for su***de. In our 5‑county South Central Public Health District, the su***de rate hovers around 27 per 100,000 people—above the state average of 24. In Twin Falls County alone, the rate exceeded 25 su***des per 100k in 2022.
This crisis impacts everyone—especially our first responders. Police officers, firefighters, EMS, and dispatchers are exposed to trauma day in and day out. This takes a toll. First responders experience significantly higher rates of PTSD, depression, anxiety, addiction, and su***de than the general public.
The emotional toll is real—and so is our community’s responsibility to support them and others who are suffering.
What’s Being Done:
1. Local Clinical Access
The new St. Luke’s Behavioral Health Clinic in Twin Falls (opened May 2024) added 11 new therapists to help both children and adults.
Crisis Hotlines:
Idaho Su***de & Crisis Line: 988 (24/7, statewide)
District 5 Crisis Hotline – connects you with region-specific resources and support
2. First Responder Wellness Tools
The Lexipol Cordico App, now available to employees of the Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office, provides confidential 24/7 access to peer support, licensed clinicians, chaplains, and over 60 mental wellness topics—from burnout to grief.
We are incredibly grateful to our Twin Falls County Commissioners for recognizing the need and helping fund this critical tool for our deputies and staff.
3. Specialized Clinicians & Peer Support
Lexipol partners with First Responder Wellness, offering culturally informed and trauma-specific care for those in uniform.
Specially trained clinicians and peer teams are helping normalize mental health support and reduce stigma across the first responder community.
4. Magic Valley Su***de Awareness and Prevention
This local nonprofit plays a vital role in educating the public, hosting community events, advocating for awareness, and supporting families affected by su***de.
They offer a network of hope, healing, and connection for survivors of su***de loss and are deeply invested in improving mental health outcomes across our region.
Why This Matters to You:
Mental health struggles are not rare—especially in rural Idaho.
Our first responders need support just as much as they provide it.
Families across the Magic Valley are quietly hurting—and they need us to speak up, reach out, and act.
