Anyone recognize this building? Montgomery Ward's was established in Tyler in 1929, located at 202 S. College. In 1956, the MW moved to Bergfeld Shopping Center. In 1966, the store added a 20,000 sq ft expansion, including an escalator. The store was permanently closed in April 1999.

Time for a community check-in! Junked vehicles are not just an eyesore but a code violation in Tyler. If you see one on the streets, report it to the City of Tyler Police Department. Or if you see a junked vehicle on a property, give Code Enforcement a call at (903) 531-1312. 🚘

Today's the day: and we're excited to spend it recognizing Driver/Engineer Travis Johnson!

"Firefighting was always not my first choice. I had many other dreams, but with the influence of getting into the service by my late great friend Jalen Smith, I decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, with his passing in 2013, I was never able to see him fulfill his dreams of becoming a full-time fireman anywhere. However, his influence is the reason why I am here at Smith County. I know I am fulfilling his dream for him because fighting fire here is what he would have wanted, and I would’ve wanted to be right there fighting fire with him.

The combination of firefighting and emergency medical services allows me to help others in their most critical moments, whether it’s saving lives, protecting property, or providing comfort in times of crisis. I was drawn to the challenge, the teamwork, and the sense of purpose that comes with the job. The fast-paced environment, problem-solving under pressure, and the opportunity to serve the community made this the perfect career for me. The best part about this job is the way you get to interact with the community.

The last eight years spent here have been nothing short of memorable, from the guys I get to live with a third of my life, to being able to give back to the citizens of Smith County. I am beyond grateful that I get to wake up and come to work every tour at this department and can’t wait to see what God has in store for both my career and the continuous development of Smith County.

Also, Happy Black History Month! ✊🏿"

Driver/Engineer Johnson, we're lucky to have you as a part of our team!
