While most breast cancers are not inherited, about 5% to 10% of breast cancers are linked to inherited gene mutations, most commonly in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. While genetic testing isn't recommended for everyone, it is advised for some individuals with certain risk factors for genetic mutations.

According to the American Cancer Society, most breast cancers are diagnosed in women over 50, which coincides with the average postmenopausal stage. Today is National Mammography Day. Screening is the most effective way to detect early-stage breast cancer, when it is easiest to treat. Current guidelines recommend women with average risk between the ages of 40-74 be screened with a mammogram every two years. Talk to your physician about your risk level and your recommended screenings.
