Our March DAISY award winner, Maria, exceeded all expectations to help support a patient in an uncomfortable situation:

I had the privilege of shadowing Maria during my critical care rotation. Maria’s care was exceptional. She was meticulous and observant. I feel she deserves to receive the Daisy award because she went above and beyond for her patients. Maria had a patient who was not expecting to be here as long as they were, so they did not prepare for this extended stay. They had no batteries for their hearing aid and were unable to hear. Maria called around to check for the specific batteries that they needed and purchased them with her own money to ensure that her patient had their own autonomy. She went above and beyond the nursing role to bring care to this patient. I’m truly thankful that I had the opportunity to follow and learn from such an extraordinary nurse.

We're proud of Maria for both doing what it takes to ensure her patient felt care for, and leading by example as an incredible role model. Thank you for all you do, Maria!

We're so proud of the compassion shown by our nurses, especially February DAISY Award winner Macy. Patient Fred's wife shared:

"On December 24, 2024 my husband Frederick C. Miller (Fred) was admitted to Reading Hospital to R Building. He had great nurses right from the beginning. He had a setback and was quickly moved to T-4. This is where Macy showed us her very caring and competent nursing skills. She has a very compassionate heart!

Fred was confined to bed, due to his oxygen levels going too low if doing too much “activity.” He could, however, stand and use a urine bottle and a bedside commode, both of which create embarrassment for a man! He never felt that way with Macy. She was very patient and understanding. Fred always spoke very highly of her skills to me when I came to visit each day. He would call her “exceptional!” He improved, slightly, and was moved to R-3. There, too, he had great nurses but he did miss Macy.

On January 24 Fred went home on Hospice Care. Fred wanted to go home. He talked to and visited with family and friends that day and was just sitting back in his Lazy Boy chair. He had coffee and a donut with his son for breakfast.

On Saturday, January 25, late evening Fred passed away, peacefully, finally done gasping for breath. He kept reminding me not to forget about Macy. Of course I did not. I am writing to thank Macy for all the wonderful care she gave Fred on T4."

Congratulations to our January Mountain Laurel Award winner for her compassion and support during an incredibly difficult time. Our patient's family shared:

"In the early hours of January 10, 2025, my father’s life was forever changed. He woke up to thick smoke in his home and quickly realized the need to evacuate. In his t-shirt and shorts, without shoes or a coat, in the freezing weather, he ran out to the road to flag down the first vehicle he saw approaching his house. The driver stopped and kept my father sheltered in her van as she called 911. She did not leave my dad until EMS arrived and evaluated him.

He lost everything that day. His home no longer stands. He told me the story of the “nice van driver that stayed with him.”

Alissa was his angel that fateful morning. I cannot adequately express my full gratitude in words for taking him into the van and keeping him warm and protected during an immensely vulnerable time until further help arrived. It happens that I am also an employee of Tower Health (BSN, RN-AMB-BC, IBCLC.) No one knew who the van driver was, although I fortunately found the connection on a social media post. Alissa is over-qualified to receive the Mountain Laurel Award for her extraordinary impact as the first person on the scene on a very traumatic morning. She provided a source of comfort as my father watched his home burn. I am forever grateful."

Huge congratulations to our January DAISY award winner, Meghan Pagan, RN III, Pediatrics. Meghan's confidence and skills helped her patient's family feel supported during a difficult time and we're so grateful to have nurses like her!

Meghan's patient's parents shared:
"My daughter was a patient diagnosed with Staph scalding skin syndrome that was further complicated by a drug allergy. This nominee... was truly a blessing. Not only did she take precious time to sit and talk with me through all of my fears and anxieties of having a hospitalized child but most importantly she demonstrated excellent assessment skills. She listened when I expressed concerns that something was wrong and advocated for my daughter to be transferred to a higher level of care when she saw that my daughter was not getting better. My daughter’s care was transferred to Hershey Medical Center where she saw pediatric dermatology and infectious disease specialists who were able to modify her treatment plan that ultimately led to a full recovery. I am beyond grateful for this nominee. She exemplifies everything good about nurses. THANK YOU!"
