Hearing “you have cancer” can feel like everything is spiraling out of control. They’re scary to hear, absolutely. However, Iylon knows the power of precision applied to oncology gives detailed insights into each individual tumor, giving oncologists a leg up in making informed treatment decisions.
Precision medicine leads to the opportunity to be enrolled in different targeted therapies. This does mean that some patients won’t be eligible, based on their cancer’s mutations or behavior. But it can allow some patients access to treatments they may have otherwise not known they were eligible to receive. This is why Iylon cares so deeply about making precision medicine accessible to more people.
In fact, many cancers are already benefiting from precision medicine treatments. Setting the stage was a study out of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute showing that non-small cell lung cancer patients whose tumors had a mutated version of a protein called Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) responded dramatically to a drug that specifically targets the EGFR protein.
“Prior to this research, lung cancer treatment had not made much progress. Today, patients with EGFR mutations who are treated with targeted drugs survive an average of two to three years, with some making it to five years or more.” [link]
Today, there are more precision medicine treatments than ever, and the list of eligible cancers continue to grow as researchers and clinicians continue to understand more about cancer.

month has drawn to a close and we’re beyond grateful for those who showed support for lung cancer researchers, physicians, patients, and survivors. Extra special shoutout to our wonderful guest attendees and speakers.
Iylon Precision Oncology organized our online meeting on precision lung cancer awareness at the end of November, co-hosted by Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute in Mumbai.  The webinar featured various specialists and experts from around the world share their knowledge on important aspects of lung cancer from detection to treatment and beyond.
We were so pleased to highlight members of the Iylon team: Dr. Sewanti Limaye, Dr. Sendurai Mani, and Dr. Keighley Reisenauer, as well as many of Iylon’s advisors including Dr. Vivek Subbiah and Dr. Balazs Halmos. The meeting also featured Ms. Terri Conneran, representing her experiences as a precision lung cancer survivor and founder of the KRAS Kickers community, and Mr. Mukul Bhola, CEO of The Defeat – NCD Partnership, United Nations Institute for Training and Research.
The Guest of Honor and keynote speaker was veteran Bollywood actor, Sanjay Dutt who spoke about his journey from the time he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in August 2020 to how he approached precision-based treatment. He spoke about the importance of giving up smoking and maintaining positive mental attitude and a healthy fitness lifestyle that helped him in his fight with cancer.
The panel session featured questions from the attendees and listeners to the experts in a lively and thoughtful discussion. This conversation paralleled Iylon’s mission to bring together world leaders in precision oncology with patients around the globe, providing individualized cancer care and treatment recommendations.

03/11/2021

EGFR is a gene that codes for a protein called epidermal growth factor receptor. It is mutated most commonly in non-smoking, Asian women. Mutations are categorized into two classes: common and rare. For those with common mutations, the list of approved treatments is substantive and includes:

osimertinib (Tagrisso)
afatinib (Gilotrif)
dacomitinib (Vizimpro)
erlotinib (Tarceva)
gefitinib (Iressa)
Necitumumab (Portrazza)

These drugs work to block signs that come from the EGFR protein. These signals promote the growth of cancers carrying the mutation. Blocking the signal should block the cancer. One broad type of drug is called tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which slow the growth of tumors carrying EGFR mutations. However, for patients with late-stage disease, this treatment will only act to buy time temporarily. Eventually they must undergo chemotherapy, which, too, will eventually stop working. For patients carrying a rare EGFR mutation, there are currently no approved targeted therapies.

Clinical trials are working to expand treatment options. One that is nearly a decade old has worked with over 10,000 patients and shows signs of promising results. Patient-advocacy groups such as EGFR Resistors are working to provide community and share data.
