With the high school football season kicking off across Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, it’s important that parents & caregivers of football players be aware of some of the most common and likely injuries that can occur during game time or even during practices.
While knee injuries, concussions, ankle sprains, fractures and muscle & ligament strains are well-known as the obvious common football injuries, whiplash is often overlooked.
Often associated with car accidents, whiplash in football is a neck injury caused by a violent & forceful back and forth movement of the head caused by a fall, tackle or collision. Even a sudden stop and change in direction without contact can cause whiplash.
Are you concerned that your athlete has suffered whiplash?
Here are some whiplash symptoms to look out for:
✔️neck pain & stiffness
✔️headaches
✔️limited range of motion
✔️numbness or tingling
✔️fatigue or dizziness
If your student athlete has suffered an injury, or you are concerned about symptoms they have, it’s critical that they are properly evaluated by medical professional immediately. The quicker the evaluation, the better the possible healing, recovery and outcome will be.
Dr. Santana has been treating area football players and other student athletes for over 14 years and is your go-to for second options for treatment plans that aren’t progressing elsewhere.
