“Health coaching is not regulated and there is not standard for background, education, or training for those acting as health coaches” (An Examination of Health Coaching as a Developing Profession, 2025, PMC12080863).
Cue the eye rolling and head shaking because I just don’t agree.
There actually are standards for health coaching, so let me give you a few things to keep in mind if you have ever wondered whether working with a health coach is right for you.
While it is true that anyone can call themselves a health coach, the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching exists to set standards and competencies for training programs, define a strict scope of practice, and ensure that National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches receive quality continuing education.
Some red flags to look out for when it comes to health and wellness coaches are:
❌Promising quick fixes
❌ Pushing supplements (unless they also hold a medical license that allows them to prescribe)
❌ Lacking training in science based techniques such as motivational interviewing, active listening, behavior change, and goal setting
❌ Not being board certified or at least certified by an NBHWC approved program
If you are considering working with a coach, take the time to ask questions, check credentials, and make sure they are qualified to support you. Choosing the right coach can make all the difference in your health journey.
🌟P.S. I’m Shannon, a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and owner of E&E Health Coaching. I help busy professionals take back their energy so they can show up fully for the things and people that matter most.
If you’re tired of nodding off during the workday, running low on energy when you travel, or spending your weekends just trying to recover instead of doing what you love, you're not alone. Feel free to DM me anytime if you’re ready for support or just want to explore what’s possible!
