Some awesome client feedback!
A couple of months ago, I was receiving this really special body work for the nervous system called Elan ( ) from my friend .dismer .
One of the aspects of the work is that she asks you to breathe into certain places in your body while her hands are holding that place, directing your breath to the location.
During one of these breath directions, I took a big deep breath, and she said, “do it again, but this time, use the same amount of focus, but try half as hard.”
When she said those words to me, I had an awakening on the table. I woke up to how unnecessarily hard I try at all kinds of things. How I’ve equated “trying hard” with really being in it. And how “trying hard” is an unnecessary, and counterproductive use of my energy. And that focus + relax & ease is actually the more powerful and effective approach to basically everything.
I think about this moment often when I’m really trying to make something happen. Keep the focus, but don’t try so hard. Stay connected, but don’t over-function. Show up to the project, conversation, assignment, but keep it simple and enjoyable. Have a goal, but don’t be so attached and surrender fully to the surprises of the journey. Relax the tension in your body with breath and awareness. Do what’s natural. Follow the flow.
Life doesn’t have to be so hard. When we soften the hard inside of us, then the hard doesn’t show up as much outside of us.
We are the masters of our Universe. We control the weather within our own beings.
Stay focused. Stay relaxed. Don’t try so hard.
