Happy Ray Charles Day, St. Augustine! This iconic musician was born on September 23rd, 1930 in Albany, Georgia. His time in St. Augustine started around the age of seven when he was enrolled at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. FSDB's tutelage and young Ray’s natural talent harmonized to shape him into an ambitious, capable young man. He was known to play at local music halls throughout Lincolnville (amongst other mischief).

In 2016, the City of St. Augustine declared today as our official Ray Charles Day. Next time you’re at the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center, make sure you visit our Entertainer’s Room to view a piano that he played. In 2024, let’s celebrate Ray Charles’ artistry, determination, and good humor! Happy Birthday, fine sir.
