This Black History Month, Donor Network West is celebrating the incredible contributions the Black American community has made and continues to make in healthcare. We're privileged to celebrate Black History in conjunction with American Heart Month and educate our communities on the importance of healthcare in the Black/African American community, the importance of maintaining a healthy heart, and how far a heart transplant can go.

Of the total candidates currently waiting for a kidney transplant, 27.8% were Black/African American. With more than 29,000 African Americans waiting for an organ transplant, Black Americans make up the largest group of multiethnic people needing an organ transplant. This is why it is vital for more people to register to become organ donors. The need for intercultural donations is even more significant as organ transplantations' success rate and future success increase interculturally. American Heart Month is imperative because heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups. One person dies every 33 seconds from cardiovascular disease.

When we educate our diverse communities about organ, eye and tissue donation, many of our community members are suprised at the incredible that tissue donation is, and how these donations also heals lives and lead to better health overtime. What isn't included in the amazing 2,910 tissue donors who healed lives across our service area, are the babies who entered the world as heroes alongside their mothers.

Our Birth Tissue Donation program was introduced in early 2025, led by Matt Graves, our Vice President of Tissue and Donor Operations, allowing mothers to donate their placenta following childbirth, a decision that 397 amazing mothers said YES to, as they received one of their greatest gifts of all. These tissues, which are typically discarded after delivery, can instead be donated for transplantation, research and education.

Alongside these incredible mothers, our communities across Northern Nevada and Northern California chose at large to give the gift of healing to their neightbors, by saying yes to tissue donation.

While O is the most common blood type, it is also one of the hardest to match for kidney transplants. Experts say patients with this blood type face the longest wait times compared to others. With no compatible family members, Bass and Garcia’s survival depends on the generosity of a stranger willing to donate a kidney.

In a heartfelt moment caught on camera, Bass and Garcia shared words of gratitude that carry a deeper meaning than ever.

Matt Garcia told his mother-in-law, “Thank you so much.”

She responded, “I couldn’t do it without you.”

For this family, those words are more than gratitude; they are hope.

What. A. Week.

What a week of celebrating Organ, Eye, and Tissue donors heroes, their families, and the transplant recipients who carry forward that heroism through their received gifts. This upcoming Donate Life Rose Parade Float presented by OneLegacy that will be unveiled at the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day has overflowed us with gratitude and passion, and is a reminder of how powerful every donor’s story and life is.

This morning at the Rose Parade Float Judging the Band Directors Marching band performed together for the Tournament of Roses judges.

When they finished, they came to the OneLegacy Donate Life float and asked to play for our honorees. One band member had a special connection. He had lost his 8-year-old daughter, who became an organ donor.

As they performed “Amazing Grace,” to a room full of donor families and organ recipients it became a moment none of us will ever forget — a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of organ, eye and tissue donation and the lives honored through this float.

Moments like this are why we do this work.
