It is with a heavy heart that we share news of the untimely passing of a friend and colleague. Veteran Hennepin EMS EMD and Paramedic Paul Jacobs died yesterday at the age of 54. While vacationing in Cancun with his wife and friends, Paul suffered sudden cardiac arrest during a snorkeling excursion and did not survive.

Paul began his career at Hennepin EMS in November of 1998 as a paramedic, later moving to dispatch. Paul’s professionalism and dedication to the mission has touched nearly all of us for our entire career, with some having worked with Paul at HealthEast prior to Hennepin EMS. Paul exercised his veteran status as a leader in the ECC and was a positive contributor, sharing his years of wisdom and expertise with the team. Paul contributed to several workgroups and committees, and was a member of the Incident Dispatch Team.

Our grief is profound. The loss of Paul will leave a lasting impact on those who were fortunate to call him a friend and colleague. Hennepin EMS and Hennepin Healthcare are prepared to support our team with peer support, grief counseling, or any other needs. Our hearts are with Paul’s family and friends during this difficult time.

**Equipment Corner**
Vacuum splints are like a small vacuum mattress that is used as a temporary splint. They operate by extracting air from the splint itself to enable the thousands of polystyrene balls inside the splint to mold around the injured body part similar to an orthopedic cast. Providing stability for any possible fractures or other extremity injuries.

**Equipment Corner**
Today’s equipment is the stair chair! LifeTech trains constantly in order to provide top quality EMS care to any patients. The stair chair gives staff a quick and easy way to move patients. This especially helps in tight areas including stairwells as it has a track system allow the providers to glide the chair without causing any unnecessary stress to the patient.

**Equipment Corner**
LifeTech carries several different types of basic AEDS also known as automated external defibrillators. All LifeTech staff is trained in the operation of these devices as well as CPR for cardiac arrest situations to provide early on scene defibrillation. Did you know that AED usage within the first three minutes of SCA (sudden cardiac arrest) can increase survival rates over 80% and The sooner an AED is used the more likely it will work. A SCA victim losses 7-10% chance at survival for every minute after an SCA.
