Years ago I used to be afraid to go on trips alone fearing my diabetes would leave me in a hypoglycemic episode I was unable to handle on my own. Well over the years I have learned to not let fear run my life. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not intentionally search out dangerous situations, however, I don’t let my fear keep me from living my life. I love to travel. I love adventures. This weekend I traveled to TN and then to KY. I toured Nashville, Went to the Parthenon and then to Mammoth cave. I met a ton of new people and had an amazing whirlwind of an adventure.

A little food for thought for all of you having a hard time this week.

🇺🇸🗽
Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our freedom amd for many it is a time to party and overindulge on goodies. Who doesnt love a good barbeque? Well as those of us with type 1 diabetes know this can spell disaster for our blood sugars. But before you think “oh great another holiday I cant enjoy like a normal person”, I want to give you some guidance.
Having diabetes does not mean you cant celebrate. Have diabetes does not mean your life is so hard and staying in range is inpossoble at a party. I know for a fact that this is not true. Diabetes can be challenging but just as this day celebrates our country’s independence, let today be the day you chose to be become more independent with your diabetes!

I am sure you are thinking what is she talking about right? “How can I be independent with diabetes”? And I don’t mean insulin dependant, because we are already there. Lol 😂 Diabetes is a life long chronic illness. It is with you day in and day out. So don’t you want to learn how to live your life in sync with your diabetes? Don’t you want to find a way to be free of fear, anxiety, anger, sadness and hopelessness? Well I can show you how. Let me teach you how to be more proactive about your diabetes. Let me show you how to enjoy your life, even with diabetes. It’s time to break free from the bonds of diabetes. Declare your independence from fear and learn to take control of your diabetes.

I love that when my kids introduce me to their friends, they say "my mom is really fun and nice, well unless her blood sugar is high, then she can be kind of mean". I don't know whether to laugh or to cry at this. Does anyone else out there feel like their body is taken over by an evil alien that can do nothing but yell when their sugar is high? I hate being over 250, because when I am, everything annoys me. EVERYTHING! I have been working on making myself walk away from things and finding a quiet room to "rest" for 30-60 minutes until I can get my sugar down under 200 and feel normal again. Let me hear some of your stories of High Blood Sugar Rage! We should make up a new term for this how about HSF (high sugar face). LOL

I just returned home from a wonderful, although busy week of traveling to see 4 states and their capitols and to spend time with one of my brothers. My brother Ashton has 3 kids and a few years ago 2 of them were diagnosed with type 1 within a month. Until then I had been the only one in our family. I am amazed at how well these boys handle their daibetes at ages 7 and 9. They are already able to bolus theough their pumps and to track their sugars. I am also amazed at how well my brother and his wife are handling things. They truly are heros in my eyes. Spending a week with them helped me to realize even more that living with type 1 diabetes does not have to be a horrible curse. Yes at times it can be stressful but for the most part, life is good. I am so grateful for the technology that is now available that helps these amazing boys live a happy and normal life. We swam, we hiked, we played every kind of ball there is. These boys are a way fantastic examples to the rest of us.

This weekend I took my kids to a local state park to climb 85 feet up a tower to view the park from above the trees. There was also a swinging bridge to cross from one tower to the other. I had read about it online and thought we would check it out. Sunday morning I got up early to do a trail ride through my community’s trail. I have to say although it is hot and humid and at times just plain “ick”, there are ways to get out there and be active. So, I challenge you all to find something outside to do this week. Post below showing me what you have found to do. I can’t wait to see what your all of you “Adventures in Diabetes” are!

I am so thankful for Dr. Banting's discovery in 1921 that insulin could be used to treat diabetes. I would not be here today without this discovery 100 years ago. Today, over 8 million people rely on insulin to survive. The discovery of insulin has allowed all of us with T1D to live, so I challenge you to think about this over the next month and to strive to live "your diabetes life" just a little bit better! For anyone who is interested in learning how to do this, please contact me for a free Diabetes Coaching consultation.

As a single Mom, the weekends that my kids are at their dad's house used to be hard for me. I would worry so much about being alone and what if something happened to me (like a bad hypoglycemic episode) and nobody was there to help me. Well, thanks to my Dexcom and my Tandem pump's control IQ, I feel a lot better and safer. I don't sit here worrying about what could or might happen. I used to keep this fear from letting me do the things I want, but not anymore. This weekend, I tried something new, paddleboard yoga. Now I have done tons of yoga and pilates classes and I have paddle boarded, but never have I done both together. It was super intense trying to keep my balance as I moved through the various poses, plank, down dog, pigeon, table, balanced table, cobra and so many others. I am thankful that I was willing and able to take on this challenge and I am happy to report that I made it through, without falling off. So my diabetic friends, when did you last push yourself to try something new? When did you last do something hard? I challenge you to each find something new and hard to do this week and let me hear all about it! Show me how diabetes does not keep you from living your life!!
(sorry these pictures are awful- selfies during paddleboard yoga almost impossible but I tried :-)

Living with diabetes surely has its ups and downs, but I am thankful that it does not keep me from doing the things I love. This past weekend, I went on a trip to the Tennessee Mountains to go waterfall hopping. The first waterfall we went to Cummins Falls was beautiful and although it was a fairly rough hike to get to, I am so thankful I was able to make the trek. We climbed downhills and waded across the river multiple times, stepping on and climbing up and down rocks and rugged ravines. The hike was definitely worth it and although my calf muscles (which are not used to any elevation here in FL) were on fire by the end, I am grateful for the journey. My tandem pump kept my sugar stable and I made it hypoglycemia-free! Once we got there we took turns jumping off into the water below- if you have never done this, I encourage you to, it was amazing!! One more item checked off my bucket list!
