Our flat-lander legs were screaming at us after a lot of steep hills, but the views were worth it! We have been on a mission to increase our strength and endurance in preparation for more backpacking trips. Once you figure out your "why" for staying in shape, the motivation follows. What is your favorite fun way to get exercise? Or what is the "why" that keeps you going?

I have breakfast cookies today at the market! I was playing with my magic date paste again, so these cookies don't have any refined sugar. They are made with organic, whole foods with flax seed, chia, and psyllium for a fiber boost. Sign up for my gut health class at Black Creek Arts on Saturday, September 6th if you want a hands-on experience making a variety of therapeutic foods to support your gut health!

I love how easy it is to grow eggplants in South Carolina! When I lived in the mountains, I struggled just to get them to survive. We have been loving Baba Ganoush dip lately, it is very similar to hummus except made with roasted eggplant instead of chick peas. If you struggle with the texture of eggplant or have trouble with beans, then you definitely need to check out this delicious middle eastern recipe!

I just re-read The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a classic I remembered from my childhood. The central theme of the book still resonates very strongly with me - the healing power of nature. In fact, that is what naturopathic medicine is all about! I just had a first follow-up with a client who came to me anxious, exhausted, hopeless, and in pain last month. She followed my lifestyle and supportive herbal recommendations 110%, and I swear she looked like a different person! We still have work to do to get her out of the hole of neglecting herself for so long, but she is so happy to be sleeping and starting to feel like herself again. Click the link in my bio if you want to schedule a free call with me to get started on your healing journey!

I was excited to meet Kerry Davis Lmt Sfg at her weekly stretch and mobility class this morning! Kerry specializes in deep tissue massage, and has a wealth of knowledge from 20 years of experience and her passion for continued learning. She is also a certified StrongFirst trainer, and loves to help people learn how to move properly in order to address biomechanical issues contributing to pain. After hearing her clients rave about her massages, I am definitely going to book one at Advanced Wellness Center Chiropractic! She is offering these Saturday morning classes at 8:30 am for only $5 for the rest of the summer (except the holiday weekend). Put it on your calendar so you don't miss out!

I like to encourage people to improvise in the kitchen, and to view recipes as merely a jumping off place for creativity with what you have on hand. Last weekend I had the most delicious breakfast bowl at The Rooster that featured roasted sweet potatoes, so I decided I would make something like that.

I found a head of cauliflower lingering in the back of my fridge, so put both of these veggies in the oven to roast while I figured out what else to make. I put on a pot of quinoa, then stirred in a little pesto sauce for flavor after it was done cooking. I had sausage from Asper Family Farm that makes everything delicious, along with some mushrooms. Then I sprinkled on chopped red cabbage and the last of my garden lettuce, and topped it off with leftover mint tsatziki and sprouts from GroWild Acres LLC. It was amazing, and I have tons of leftovers for the days to come!

Come on down to the Farmer's Market this morning for some Mint-spiration! I have fresh mint, and I am sharing recipes from around the world that use this wonderful fragrant herb. Not only is mint a classic cooling herb, but it also aids digestion and is used in teas for sinus congestion. We are at Burry Park until 1:00 pm today 😀

Our Story

As I was pulling the trailer down to South Carolina to start our new life in Hartsville, I knew I would miss the friends we had made and the practice we had built during our 11 years in Brevard, North Carolina. But already I was missing the mountains! Driving along the monotonous highway, I started musing over what to call my new practice when the name Kalmia Wellness popped into my head.

Kalmia latifolia is the botanical name for mountain laurel, a beautiful shrub which is abundant in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It is normally not found in the flat lands (as the name implies), but at Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville there is a steep north-facing bluff where the mountain laurel thrives. I had always enjoyed wandering through Kalmia Gardens during previous visits to my husband’s home town. Now this lovely and peaceful oasis is my little piece of the mountains right here in Hartsville!

At Kalmia Wellness we use nature as our guide. Studies show that spending time in nature, whether hiking on mountain trails or sitting on the porch listening to the birds, reduces stress. We can also access the healing power of nature through the food we choose and the plant medicines we find all around us. The common dandelion that persistently shows up in our lawns contains valuable compounds that help detoxify the body!

My goal is to empower you to achieve your health goals. Taking the time to listen to you and your story is a very important part of the process. There is more to your health than the sum of your symptoms. Education is always a big part of what I do, helping you determine what is and isn’t working and implementing a doable plan to make healthy lifestyle changes. Real food nutrition is the gas that powers your engine, while custom herbal formulas, targeted nutrients, and specific homeopathic remedies further open the doors to deep healing. Welcome to the journey!
