I recently found out what the cesarean rate was for Planned Community Birth (aka out-of-hospital birth) and it was even lower than I expected. These are births that are planned for home or birth center, but they transition to hospital at some point and ultimately take place by cesarean. These births have special emotional challenges, but the plus is that it’s very likely that most, if not all, these cesareans were necessary and unpreventable. Read more on my blog.

Have you ever wondered what the cesarean rate is for a planned out-of-hospital birth in Oregon? I was surprised at how low it was. Avoiding preventable cesareans is important for maternal health. Perhaps there's something to be learned from Community-Based midwives about safely lowering the low-risk cesarean rate.

I know that it’s only October. I know this. But when one works with pregnant people, it’s only natural to be thinking many months ahead. Yesterday, while isolated with COVID (I’m fine! mild case) I hammered out my class dates for 2025. I still have 1 more class in 2024 Nov 10-Dec 15, so if you have a due date in January or February, that’s the one to take!

Class is located at Canyon Medical Center and geared towards people who desire an unmedicated birth, but it is appropriate for any pregnant person.

For the cost of $350, you and your partner or birth support person will learn what to expect during labor, birth, breastfeeding and postpartum. Each series is 5 weeks long with every session being taught by a different CMC doula. The classes are held in-person at the Canyon Medical Center lobby on Sundays from 10am - 1pm. There are only spots for 5 couples for each series, so be sure to register soon!
