Saturday was SUCH a fun day, getting to work with Equine Specialist extraordinaire Susan Penland and the herd . Day 1 of a 4-day family therapy intensive reminded me that PLAY is how children learn and it’s a pathway for families to heal.

Every day I wake up and kinda can’t believe I get to do this sacred work.
What’s in store for tomorrow? Week 6 of the Mindfulness and Self-Compassion experiential course Whispers with Horses, with a drum circle thrown in for some extra fun.

Whew…it’s been a minute since I have been online. I’ve been busy getting settled into my new office in Montford, which hosts many random animal visitors (this week Mr. Turkey; last month a gorgeous mama bear and cub were in our small front yard! 😬😳).

There’s been a lot of grief, y’all. So much grief. Figuring out how to hold space for others while honoring my own sadness has been quite the journey.

Which leads me to my recent news…Writing and listening to others’ stories has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, and I ADORE my new gig as a writer-in-residence with the non-profit Brothers and Sisters Like These. I am hunkering down to complete a book I’ve been working on for a few years, and am also writing a professional manual about equine-assisted therapy intensives.

When the world feels crazy, I lean hard into connection and the things that spark me. This winter that led me to a weekend workshop with my writing hero Cheryl Strayed aka Dear Sugar, and a lively and amazing writing immersion course through .

Writing programs for veterans have existed since the Second World War to help veterans make sense of their military experience and honor the voices inside calling out to be heard.

Quoting Ron Capps of the Veterans Writing Project, “not everyone is a storyteller, but everyone has a story to tell”. He reminds us that for veterans with PTSD “either you control the memory, or the memory controls you”.

Writing about the experiences of combat and its impact on one’s life can help organize what’s banging around inside and soften the grip that holds power over those who’ve seen the horrors of war. Military life holds unique and powerful memories, and through their stories, veterans and their community can bear witness to moments of honor, heartbreak, loneliness, loss, camaraderie and sacrifice.

Who we are:
Katie is a licensed Social Worker, is Certified in Perinatal Mental Health through Postpartum International, and is the mom of 2 school-age boys. She is also a yoga teacher and a mindfulness practitioner. Katie describes herself as an interactive therapist who attunes to her clients and meets them where they are, while also actively supporting their growth. She is not the therapist who quietly nods the whole session! She’s creative and engaging, and ensures that her clients have the space they need to explore the many aspects of who they are.

Elizabeth is a licensed therapist who specializes in supporting caregivers who feel overwhelmed and often unseen. She is the mom of three kids in their 20s, as well as a former NICU nurse and doula. Elizabeth believes that creating brave spaces where parents and caregivers can show up just as they are is crucial for healthy communities. She is an avid believer in the healing power of telling our stories, and is honored to serve as Writer-in-Residence with Brothers and Sisters Like These, a local non-profit whose mission is to provide healing through the arts and creative writing to veterans of all conflicts. When she’s not working, Elizabeth can usually be found on her porch swing with coffee and a good book, or out kayaking on the French Broad River.

I began offering therapy intensives this year, and I’ve been floored by the transformations I have witnessed in my clients. It’s mind-blowing to see how the model resonates with so many people.

Had so much fun in Atlanta last week, speaking with colleagues and dear friends at Perspectives Center for Holistic Therapy and their non-profit organization, The Powerful Project. Great conversation and questions about the “WHY” for exploring Therapy Intensives and restorative retreats in your private practice.
