I recently went to a meeting and met so many wonderful small business owners that have such fun services! I wanted to make a post here to help them out (the painted toad, sweet tooth of marine city, new century art gallery, and of course, my own WinRx Consulting, LLC). Feel free to look us up, ask questions, and just explore what your local small businesses have to offer!

Patients and health care providers should be aware that "compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and the agency does not verify the safety or effectiveness of compounded drugs," the FDA explained in its statement.

The federal agency warned on Tuesday that it has received reports of people experiencing "adverse events" after using compounded versions of the drugs.

There are so many factors that dictate your response to a medication, sometimes certain foods you eat or drink can cause more or less of the medication to be available in your body. Your very DNA could even be the reason you’re not getting full benefits from your therapy. You could’ve tried so many drugs, going back and forth with your doctor and pharmacy, accumulating extra pills and tablets. What if you didn’t have to go through the trial and error hassle? What if we could narrow down the medications we know you can process effectively? If you or someone you know struggles with many medications, medications that “don’t work”, or adverse effects, please reach out. I’d love to help you demystify what your DNA says about your current and future medications.

As a consultant pharmacist that offers medication therapy management services, it’s my job to educate patients on their medications so they can be knowledgeable with their treatment and health. We can laugh at this and make fun of the people that say things like in the picture OR we can stop and educate them so they know better. These people did not go to pharmacy school and 9 times out of 10 don’t even work in the healthcare field. If no one told them, how would they know acetaminophen is the generic for brand name Tylenol? What’s the difference? The main ingredient (acetaminophen) is the same but inactive things like coloring or flavor can be different. Now you know. If you or someone you know needs help managing or understanding their medicine, please check out the link in my bio. This is my passion and I work one-on-one with you so you can be confident with current medications and have a better understanding of your health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc).

I appreciate that they identified mental health disorders as another contributor to maternal mortality and noting that it was not taken into account in national data. First step to solving a problem is identifying it.

“maternal mortality was already increasing before the pandemic, and its leading causes have not changed. They are cardiovascular or coronary conditions, infection, and hemorrhage. Cardiovascular complications (eg, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, cardiomyopathy, cerebrovascular accident) account for 30% to 40% of deaths within a year of pregnancy, including in the postpartum period.3 Deaths related to mental health disorders are not routinely recorded as part of national maternal mortality data.”

A big reason why I became so interested in pharmacogenomics was for its guidance in mental health medications. It is a tough process for patients struggling with depression, anxiety, adhd, and so many more. It is a very much trial and error approach with a patient having to first “fail” the first line of treatment before moving onto the next. All along the way, the patient is tapered off and titrated up on different medications that it gets confusing for them. The beauty with using a tool like pharmacogenomics is just by a simple cheek swab, we get a world of information on which medications can be given at standard dose, which ones need to be adjusted, or which ones the patient’s body doesn’t process well.

If you or someone you know is cycling through mental health medications and feeling like “nothing is working”, I’d love to step in and simplify the process!

Nutrigenomics looks at the effects of nutrients on your DNA and vice versa. Along with pharmacogenomics, nutrigenomics is a great tool toward personalization. Pharmacogenomics can help personalize your medicine (current and future), and nutrigenomics can help personalize your diet, workout plan, and lifestyle habits. We don’t live in a one-size fits all world. It’s about time our healthcare started tailoring to us.

If you or someone you know could benefit from pharmacogenomics or nutrigenomics, please reach out! I’d love to give you more information and answer any questions.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey, emotionally and career-wise. I didn’t think I could do this. I couldn’t even dream of WinRx Consulting being created. But here I am, meeting and talking to so many people that open my world and get me excited for what’s to come.

Sample conversation below showing a snippet of what’s commonly asked. I’d love to continue helping people reach their health and fitness goals so if you or someone you know could benefit from my services, please don’t be shy to reach out!

We all know there are factors BMI doesn’t take into account, leading to inaccuracies. Though it is not predicted to be changed soon, it is being scrutinized and other methods considered.

"Unfortunately, BMI is an imperfect measure of body composition that differs with ethnicity, s*x, body frame, and muscle mass," note Laine and Wee.

BMI is the go-to obesity metric, but there is increasing acknowledgment that it's an imperfect measure and can differ with ethnicity, s*x, and body frame; hence, the growing chorus for alternatives.

I became an advocate for precision medicine when I wanted better for my clients and patients. Too many times, I talked to people who went through multiple medications that didn't work for them or made them feel worse. The whole time, they are paying for these medications and throwing them away when they get switched to something else in less than 2 months. I felt terrible because of the grueling process they went through just to feel better and be well. And I felt powerless at that time, only being able to counsel, refer, and hope them the best.

WinRx Consulting was born when I wanted to do more. I wanted to check the blind spots. I wanted to be the person to go to when people were overwhelmed with the unknown of their medications and health. I wanted to help people that struggled with weight loss and diet rather than watch them be completely reliant on medication. I help people understand how their DNA affects their medications, health and wellness.

If you or someone you know is interested in how I can help, please feel free to send me a message. I'd love to get to know you and see what I can do for you. I've created a form so it's easier for us to stay in touch or if you just want to follow what me and WinRx Consulting are up to.

Sharing a post I saw to bring awareness. I had asked the poster for permission to use her experience to bring awareness and she agreed wholeheartedly.

“Today I went to my doctor and cried to her and told her….. My life is terrible. My quality of life is horrible. I am hanging on my a thread here…..She just politely informed me that she may not be the Dr that can help me best. This is my new Primary Dr, who I need for everything and yet she has done nothing. Told me that it’s kinda “inappropriate” to come in there with all this info and expect to get through it because we should be aware they only get 20 minutes. She said “I don’t have time now but I will try and talk to internal medicine and see if they will take you on”….. as she is escorting me out of the exam room. Yea. Nobody cares anymore…. empathy has FLOWN out the window at WARP SPEED with compassion right behind it.”

I read this and it hurts my heart for a patient to be told it’s “inappropriate” to be open with her concerns and health problems because it won’t “fit in the 20 min window”. I KNOW we are burnt out. Doctors, pharmacists, nurses, physical therapists, physician assistants, none of us are immune to the compassion exhaustion. But this patient is in need and crying for help...if this is beyond your scope of practice do not “try” to refer the patient to the right specialists, DO IT.

Did you know that feeling so , getting , feeling like your workouts are not quite getting you where you want to be could be due to your body’s tendencies and your genetics?

It’s crazy. Because when we think of testing, we think of eye color or ancestry and 23&me (data we can use in your package by the way). But we can go much farther with your results. We can see how you metabolize present and (goodbye to ), and custom and plans (you get to see which vitamins and minerals your body tends to be low, normal, or high on).

Best part about this: your never changes. Meaning this is a one and done test.

You don’t have to tough it out like Gengar. Book a free call, and let’s see if we can get you feeling the way you want to.

Hope you all had a great Easter! I have been excited to share with you this article discussing and associations with lower and type two DM risk. Perfect for a ☀️

as the quick snippet below suggests, there is still more research to be done for concrete evidence. But what an interesting and exciting topic to follow up on!

“They did not find any strong associations between genetically predicted plasma caffeine concentrations and risk of any of the studied disease outcomes (ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and stroke).
The thermogenic response to caffeine has been previously quantified as an approximate 100 kcal increase in expenditure per 100 mg daily caffeine intake, an amount that could result in reduced obesity risk. Another possible mechanism is enhanced satiety and suppressed energy intake with higher caffeine levels, the researchers say.”

Using a genetic biomarker for caffeine consumption, researchers found inverse relationships with lower body weight and type 2 diabetes.

Look. At. This.

It is all the areas is being considered. Being an advocate for , a factor that is still being met with resistance, I’m making sure I keep an to safer alternatives. Let me give you a snippet of the article just to make one thing clear:

“freely prescribing" cannabinoids for chronic pain in patients who aren't on is not good practice.
"We have to take seriously the potential adverse effects of [cannabis], including ma*****na use disorder, interference with learning, memory impairment, and psychotic breakthroughs," said Gilligan.
Given the current climate, it would appear that is a long way from being endorsed by the US Food and Drug Administration, but for clinicians interested in trying CBM for patients, the guidelines may offer a roadmap for initiation and an alternative to prescribing opioids.”

New research and studies will continue to be done so that we can keep improving

It is easy to dismiss incoming and new ideas but, as far as I’ve seen, the field is ever-changing. Let’s keep our minds open for what’s to come.

New clinical practice guidelines for cannabis in chronic pain management have been released.

Consider this your reminder to stop and breathe. Wherever you are in life, it’s okay. Feeling like you’re stuck? Left behind on the life plan that other people typically follow?

That’s okay.

Because you’re not them. You’re you. The only one of you. No matter what age you are, it does not measure if you’re ahead or behind. Keep your eyes on your goals and dreams. Don’t compare yourself to anyone except the you yesterday. Be better for you. Don’t give up.

One of the best things about running a business is not forcing people to work with me. That’s not to say I don’t want to work with clients, it’s the no-pressure environment that I get to create.

Do you like what I do?
Do you see how this can benefit you?
Do you want to work with me?

The decision is as much yours as it is mine. I give quality work and I want to work with quality people. If I recognize that your needs fall outside my scope of practice, I have no problems referring you to the right people and resources. Let’s start:

How can I help?

Say what you want but I like my coffee at a 5🤣 Throughout my short life this is how I’ve always preferred it. I’m sure you all know your preferences like the back of your hand. Your favorite color, sweet vs savory, the way you like to dress, etc. But what about your body? What does your body say about your nutritional tendencies, workouts, lifestyle and diet?

I look at a client’s genetic profile and see if there are medications that work better for them based on their results. Not only can I narrow down which medications are better suited for a client, but I can see vitamin and mineral tendencies, what workouts and diet are better suited for their needs, and more! Talk about personalization 😌

Keep the conversation open-ended. There is no excuse to cut corners and sacrifice quality care when someone’s safety depends on the education you’re providing. Picking up my family’s prescriptions and my own has shown me where we are in patient care. Short-staffed, overworked, and rushed for time. Compassion fatigue so very evident. We need to do better. Make better work environments for employees, give patients the time they need to understand their NEW medications. You won’t believe the difference we can make.

More educational content headed your way!

"a possible window of opportunity early in life, less than 3 years of age, for more successful disease remission," Justin Schwartz, MD, PhD, an allergist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, told a crowd at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (AAAAI) 2023 Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

Of the 80 total OIT courses, 76 (95%) reached maintenance in a median of 3 months.

I read this and was blown away by the snippets I shared with you above. Although OIT is still considered investigational, these findings have shifted a lot of perspectives. Just reminds us to open our minds to new therapies and diagnostic tools.
I was told in pharmacy school that by the time I graduated, so much of what I learned would’ve been updated with new guidelines. That’s just how the world of healthcare is—ever-changing.

Real-world data from food-allergic toddlers add to prior studies suggesting that oral immunotherapy is safer and more effective at very young ages.

VERY exciting update! My brochures have been made and they are chef’s kiss 😘 I love what I do and NEVER pressure anyone to work with me. When I’m out there talking about my business, all I want is for the people that DO need me to know I’m out there.

Taylor, what do you do?

For simplicity, I look at a client’s genetic profile and see if there are medications that work better for them based on their results. Not only can I narrow down which medications are better suited for a client, but I can see vitamin and mineral tendencies, what workouts and diet are better suited for their needs, and more!

I LOVED reading this one. Almost every other patient that came up for checks or had a warning on their profile. When I’d ask what the reaction was, it was almost always associated with the medication. It was difficult though. Despite the provided, patients were very insistent on keeping the allergy on their profile because they would refuse it if prescribed anyway. I do agree that are more robust and that checking adults would improve

New guidelines for de-labeling of penicillin allergy urge allergists to skip skin testing and recommend direct oral challenge to low-risk patients. Validated risk tools can help.

We all work together to give quality patient care. But what I love doing most is giving more than what is asked. I love going the extra mile with my service in care. Sharing resources with my patients is one of my favorite.

Today, I’m sharing something I see in practice. When I have geriatric patients needing help with their medications, I often see multiple . This class of medications can be used for so many conditions and work very well—for the right population. patients are more susceptible to adverse effects and with this class of medications and sometimes, those effects are overlooked as part of the aging process (ex., altered mental state), leading to more medications being added on to the list. It is never a bad thing to have your medications looked over by a pharmacist just to see possible options for better alternatives (of course, any changes to your medications should be discussed with your doctor)😊.

Need a pharmacist to help with that? Why not book a free call with me and see how I can help you
