At last evening's City Council meeting during an update presentation from Nick's Ride 4 Friends Mayor Giannettino presented Douglas A. Porten of Nick's Ride with a Certificate of Commendation. Thank you to Mr. Porten, Executive Director Ashley Moench, and all the staff and volunteers involved with the Nick's Ride 4 Friends for all of the work you do to fulfill your mission of empowering individuals towards recovery through sharing lived experience and promoting community connections.

The certificate reads as follows....
Certificate of Commendation
is hereby presented to
Douglas A. Porten
Certified Peer Recovery Advocate, Douglas A. Porten exemplified extraordinary community service and dedication when he embarked on a mission otherwise impossible on Tuesday January 16th, 2024. On this date, Mr. Porten committed to ensuring that a chronically homeless and vulnerable person struggling with co-occurring disorders safely made the long journey, across the country back home to Arizona. Mr. Porten’s actions reached far above and beyond his typical job duties at Nick’s Ride 4 Friends Inc. where he works day in and day out with individuals impacted by substance use. Mr. Porten is a testament of what it truly means to be client centered and demonstrative of what it looks like to go to any length to help another human being. Mr. Porten’s formidable commitment and unwavering support for individuals ravaged by our country’s lost war on drugs warrants public recognition. The City of Auburn commends such selfless sacrifice and declares that Mr. Porten’s actions shall act to inspire both compassion for those who continue to suffer from substance use disorders while promoting the paramount significance being of service to others in our community.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Auburn to be affixed this Twenty Third day of May 2024.

James N Giannettino, Jr, Mayor

DID YOU KNOW?
We have our own chapter for National Alliance on Mental Illness; namicayuga.org

In 2002 when a family member was diagnosed with a mental health condition, Bart & Terri Wasilenko co-founded NAMI Cayuga County. This became an opportunity to meet other persons in similar situations and provide community support. For more than two decades, NAMI Cayuga County volunteers have delivered support, education and advocacy to persons experiencing mental health conditions and their families and friends affected by mental health conditions.

NAMI Cayuga County offers support for those affected by mental illness through advocacy, free mental health support, online groups & award-winning education.

I recently learned that Ashley Moench, Executive Director of Nick's Ride 4 Friends, was chosen to serve on a newly created statewide advisory panel formed by the NY State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). The 30 member Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) will help guide and inform OASAS policy, programming, and funding priorities. I am proud of Ashley and the great work she does, as well as that of our peer support advocates and my fellow board members with Nick's Ride, to help those struggling in our community find a path to recovery. We are fortunate to have Ashley represent our community in this effort.
