This post in is response to a comment about grocery store employees and how to help them deal with the public response to mask wearing etc...
First, I think it's important to remember that the staff are dealing with both the environment at work and their own life changes. The Front Line workers are under an incredible amount of stress. While it helps to have people acknowledge the work they are doing and show appreciation, the treatment by the few unhappy with wearing masks, supply levels and the situation overall can make all the accolades fade into the distance.
There are things employers and managers can do to help staff weather this storm in a healthier manner.
1. Acknowledge the storm and those moments that are hard to deal with. Give employees the time they need to go into a back room and regroup.
2. Encourage staff to practice deep breathing exercises, stretching, 2 minute reset exercises (I can PM this to you if your interested)... And other self-care activities.
3. Ensure your staff are adequately hydrated! This helps them stay healthier and battle the fatigue they may be feeling.
4. If you are providing snacks for your staff, avoid sugary processes snacks and opt for fresh fruits and veggies, snacks high in complex carbs or protein.
5. If you can, provide consistent schedules and shifts for your team. This will help with a more consistent schedule at home and will promote better sleep.
6. Most importantly, talk to your staff. Notice when they have dark rings under their eyes. Ask them if they are doing ok? Really ok. If you can, ask how they're managing schools being out, concern for other family members etc... if someone is struggling, refer them to your company's EAP hotline number. If you suspect someone needs intervention, don't hesitate to talk with your HR about how to have that conversation and get them help!
