Effective today, Planned Parenthood can no longer bill Medicaid. Millions of people just lost access to essential healthcare, without notice.
No more:
Breast cancer screening
Cervical cancer screening
Diagnosis and treatment of reproductive illness and disease
Education, prevention, testing, and treatment of STIs - including HIV
Healthcare in response to sexual assault
Pregnancy testing and referral to obstetric care
Today, people with HIV are going to their appointments for life saving medication, and they'll be told they need to pay out of pocket despite having insurance. Many of those people will not be able to afford care, and there will be catastrophic outcomes.
You can feel however you want about abortion, but babies *will* die because of Trump's administration, alongside adults who have treatable health conditions.
We will have an increase in babies born with HIV. We will have an increase in babies exposed to HSV at birth.
You can lie to yourself about how there are other providers available, but there are *not* healthcare clinic options everywhere, especially in rural areas.
Update:
Planned Parenthood is suing the administration to address this problem. On the afternoon of 7/7/25, after this post was written, a judge issued a 14 day injunction. This means the judge said Medicaid should continue paying for services that Planned Parenthood provides to Medicaid patients. In 14 days when the injunction expires, this may take effect again.
People are reporting that they have had to pay out of pocket for their appointments anyway.
This is *not* about elective abortion services, because there is already a law that federal dollars cannot be used to pay for abortion.
