"It was as if from a scene from The Twilight Zone, as if, out of the blue, you’ve crossed an imaginary line. There’s a nice neighborhood, hip restaurant, residential zone, and bam, you’ve crossed the line into what seems a war zone. There are boarded-up houses everywhere, empty lots of land that have not been kept up in decades, broken glass, and garbage everywhere. Prostitutes walking around in broad daylight. It seems as if the police don’t even bother to show up there, not because they are afraid, but because nobody cares. There is nothing to save, why bother? If they are not here, they might cause trouble somewhere else. And it’s here, in this place, where there seems to be a total absence of hope, that James started his new life as a he**in addict."
