Still integrating the wonderful experience of the conference this past week! It’s such an honor to hold space for women and help hold the larger container of the webs we weave together. Thanks so much to my friend and mentor Linda Conroy for her leadership and care (and for inviting me to come help 4 years ago!).

Every year in my community we dance around the Maypole on Beltaine, weaving in our intentions, our weavings a divination of the season to come. The Maypole stays up, presiding over our Village Green all summer long. At Samhain, we take it down, putting the pole to rest for the winter. Then, shortly before the next Beltaine, we wake up the pole from winter’s sleep, unweave the ribbons of last year, and put the pole up again for another turn around the Wheel. As we move through this cycle, as we weave and unweave, year after year, the children grow, people come and go, and yet, the rhythm remains. Blessed Beltaine!

Remembering those who came before us is an important part of being human. As humans, we long to express our remembrance, to connect with those whom we knew and loved and lost, to connect with those who walked the land we walk, to connect with those whose blood runs in our veins. Our ancestors are waiting to be remembered. They are waiting to do the work that ancestors do.

Make space in your life to remember. This is a great time of year, but it can be done anytime. Create an Ancestor Altar. (Only include pictures of those who have passed.) Serve food to your beloveds and leave it outside for them. Talk to your grandma to learn stories of other relatives who have passed, learn stories of your family, learn stories of the place you live. Tell those stories. Tell them over and over. Say their names. They are hungry to be remembered.

For several years, my friend has invited people who self-identify as Witches to post a picture of themselves during Hallowe’en. Not in costume or ritual clothing. Not a stereotype. Just yourself, in the season of the witch. It’s that time of the rolling year and I extend that invitation again this October, in the midst of our mountain recovery.

Sweet birthday by the creek with a beautiful circle of women surrounding me, fairy candles, time alone to ponder, flowers and water.

Every year for my birthday I gather a circle of women by a special spot by the creek in my community. I put out candles on rocks along the creek surrounding us. We gather around a fire or an altar and talk, dip in the water, eat cake and drink wine.

Every so often I wonder if I should do something different for my birthday, but then I remember I’m a ritualist- this is what I do! :) This birthday ritual becomes more meaningful over time, being in the same place and same time but different year, over and over again is so powerful. Remembering past years, knowing I will be here again, the same but different.

I’m so grateful for the women in my life. Thank you for supporting me, lifting me up, and blessing my life.
