How is Dia de Los Mu***os good for our mental health? Death is no longer seen as a catastrophic event so we give ourselves permission to be happy, eat chocolate skulls, and remember beautiful memories. For this reason, the altars are made with the foods and drinks or things that that person liked.

"Some people may have trouble with the belief that the dead return to the altar as part of the tradition. But Pérez says that this too can be beneficial. “It means that you have the chance to say anything that was left unsaid before they died,” he mentioned.

Taking the stigma out of talking about death also leads us to express what we want when it is our time to die and to communicate that to family. This is important because it can help families find closure when the time comes, knowing that they respected the person’s wishes."

Latina entrepreneurs and business owners check this out!

Jennifer Lopez is doing her part for the hispanic community and I'm doing mine with Greater North Texas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce . At GNTHCC we are always looking for opportunities and resources for our members. But not only are we giving back to business owners but we have the opportunity to work with amazing organizations like Cannenta Center and Las Chicas del Barrio who provide mental health and mentorship programs for our Latina youth. Together we go farther.

Latino children with mental illnesses are half as likely to get mental health care as white non-Latino children. Latino families often report that they have a hard time getting care. When they do get care, they may be unhappy with it.

Cannenta Center strives to break the mental health stigma among the Hispanic Community and remove the financial and language barriers to services.

Latino Health: Why Are The Holidays So Stressful?

Winter holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Hanukkah are enjoyable times off of work, but also can disrupt our normal daily cycle. This alone may increase anxiety and depression in vulnerable individuals for whom a steady, predictable daily routine is the foundation of their lives.

If you find yourself suffering from symptoms such as increased trouble sleeping, heart palpitations, irritability, rapid breathing, fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, nausea, diarrhea or abdominal pain. Consider the possibility that this may be a reaction to increased stress brought on by the holidays.

Learn ways to manage these symptoms below.

Latino Health: Why Are The Holidays So Stressful? Tip: Spend time with those you choose to be with and not with whom social convention dictates.

This year, Latina Equal Pay Day falls on December 8. No, it’s not a random date: Estimates suggest that Latinas earn about 55 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. Put another way, on average, Latinas need to work about 23 months to reach the same income level as most white men.

According to Equal Pay Day, one of the forces that's behind publicizing days like December 8, full-time Latina workers earn about 57 cents for every dollar; for those who work part-time, the rate falls to about 52 cents on the dollar.

I Won’t Force My Kids to Hug Me or Anyone Else

Teaching healthy boundaries to your children can be difficult when your culture and family dynamics promote and/or expects affectionate greetings. Our own Hilda McClure explains on Parents.com why autonomy can be tricky since communities of color are often more collectivistic. Read more to learn how to help protect your child's boundaries over the holidays.

I Won’t Force My Kids to Hug Me or Anyone Else Now that I’m an adult and have kids, I’m teaching my children that their bodies are their own and that they're allowed to say no to physical affection. This can be especially difficult when family members equate respect with compliance.

With the holidays approaching fast, it is also familia time for many. Latinos' strong value on family is often a source of comfort and empowerment. Research suggests that people who feel supported by their family may also have better mental health. Warm relationships in Latino families can help a family member with a mental health condition during recovery. In addition, people with strong emotional bonds to family members tend to have fewer symptoms of psychological distress.

Receiving that level of support can sometimes be challenging. A person with a mental health condition may isolate themself, or their family might live far away. During the holidays, and always, we must encourage our family members who may feel alone to reach out to local support groups or networking opportunities.

We love to support local! This book is a wonderful self-care guide by Anna Borges which will be part of the Cannenta team’s Christmas gift (Don’t tell them! 😉). This holiday season, we are taking time to take care of us to be better for you.

Thank you, Whose Books - Your Neighborhood Bookstore for supporting Cannenta Foundation, Inc and Cannenta Center!

We had the honor of meeting Dr. Leti this week. She founded Cannenta Center for Healing and Empowerment, which is comprised of a diverse group of minority practitioners who can walk the healing journey with clients while understanding the influences that shaped their life perspectives. Cannenta Center] team is comprised of bilingual practitioners that offer mental health and counseling services in English, Spanish, & ASL.
We were able to help Dr Leti with an order of books for her team and because it’s in a non profit organization she was able to get a nonprofit discount and use her tax-exempt status for the purchase. Thank you Dr. Leti for shopping local to meet your team’s needs.

if you know someone in need of counseling and mental health services check out Cannenta Center] and reach out to us if you need help with an order for your team or organization. We would love to help. Books and team reads are a meaningful way to build team culture and a shared vision.

Come join the fun! Cannenta Center is excited to add one more passionate clinician to our team. We are looking for a bilingual (Spanish and English) fully licensed clinician to join our team for our Addison and Oak Cliff offices. This is a contract position with flexibility to create your own hours.

We are so much more than coworkers. We are a sisterhood of lift-each-other-up, speak-positivity, and cheer-for-everyone group of Latine mental health professionals. The empowerment we get from each other transcends to the work we provide for our clients.

If you or someone you know is interested, please reach out. We would love to chat more about this opportunity. We can’t wait to hear from you! Contact Hilda at [email protected]
