Seed cycling has enjoyed a lot of attention in recent years. At its core, the idea makes intuitive sense. Different phases of the menstrual cycle come with unique hormonal shifts, so aligning nutrition to support those changes is compelling.
The goal of seed cycling is to promote hormone balance by rotating specific seeds to provide targeted nutrients. Flax and pumpkin during the follicular phase (menstruation to ovulation), and sesame and sunflower during the luteal phase (post-ovulation).
While I love that this approach encourages eating nutrient-dense foods, it’s worth noting that there isn’t solid research directly supporting seed cycling. That doesn’t mean it’s ineffective, we just don’t have clinical studies confirming its impact. Personally, I’m all for eating more seeds all the time!
That said, there are other cycle-syncing strategies that is supported by research. One of my favorites is to adjust your movement patterns to align with the phases of your menstrual cycle. If you haven’t thought about cycle syncing your movement, my latest blog is about how to move with your cycle. Those who are TTC, are in perimenopause or have irregular cycles - I highly recommend this one.
