Ya'll get to see many accomplishments & updates from my ranch/cow clients, but that's not all we teach around here ๐Ÿ‘

Miss Ella has been with me the longest of all my lesson students. She is a competitive KJRA athlete and one of the handiest young kids I know ๐Ÿ˜Ž

She has grown so much as a rider over the past few years and has come to understand a variety of skills & training techniques, and is able to apply them.

At the beginning of this year, she told me she was "ready for more". We had a conversation about increasing the expectations in lessons and how that would help her grow: this kid says "let's do this." ๐ŸŽŠ

We are so proud of Miss Ella, not just for her accomplishments, but for the rider she is becoming, her kindness, and determination ๐Ÿซถ

Congratulations, Ella!

Does what you wear in the ranch horse pen really matter? In short -

While we don't want to see any blingy, or excessively "show-y" outfits, what you wear IS in fact still important. The ranch horse discipline is much more casual, but

Competitors in the ranch horse discipline should think ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž & ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐›๐ฅ๐ž with their outfit and equipment that is equally ๐™›๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ก & ๐™จ๐™–๐™›๐™š. Riders should be dressed for a job and think more traditional while bearing in mind the "horse show" aspect.

While choosing a show shirt for the ranch, remember the words above: casual. traditional. functional. workable. sensible. This doesn't mean you should be entering the pen with a grease-stained shirt or that you can't have FUN with your tops โ€“ but think "ranchy".

Many choose a button down shirt but a zipper is acceptable as well. The big key with getting an appealing look is to pick a shirt that is fitted to your body type and is a color(s) that appeals to both you AND your horse. You can have fun with fancy collars, cuffs, or even designs, but make sure it matches your saddle blanket and doesnโ€™t take away from you or your horse. Often, a basic, solid button down paired with a great saddle blanket design is a simple, yet effective way to go!

Be sure to have well-fitted, clean, and classy jeans; especially if you wonโ€™t be wearing chinks or chaps over top. Think of what would be worn doing ranch work: Would you have your widest pair of bell bottoms on to do the job? Probably not. Another thing to consider is the fit of jean. If you are wearing full chaps, having a straight leg or skinny bootcut jean will fit better under your chaps, but still fit over your boot. Some people like to wear chinks and then show off the tops of their boots by tucking the jean into the boot. This is a preference, as well as geographical. Either way, a nice, well-fitted pair of blue jeans is key. *๐™๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฅ*: get a longer inseam for your riding jeans. This will assure your jeans still cover your boots without riding up while in the saddle.

Chaps or Chinks โ€“ chaps and chinks are not a required accessory, but certainly complete any ranch horse look. ๐‘Šโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘โ„Ž ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘’ ๐‘‘๐‘œ ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘’? Whichever works for you! There is no right or wrong answer here, but again: consider your body type, leg length, the conditions in which you are showing, etc. I know many people who have a pair of each and will interchange them depending on their attire or the weather.

When it comes to ranchinโ€™ โ€“ a good, well-fitted & well-shaped cowboy hat is generally at the top of the list. For those who prefer to wear a helmet, it is completely acceptable and encouraged too!

Letโ€™s start with the helmet: If you choose this option, be sure to (again) pick one that fits well and is not flashy. Black or brown generally go with everything, and neutral is your friend in this situation.

Now for the cowboy hat: Be sure to get a hat that fits a LITTLE snug โ€“ not cutting off blood circulation to your noggin, but snug enough that when youโ€™re loping around, you donโ€™t have to worry about losing it. โ€œThe shape of your hat tells a lot about your personalityโ€. Get a hat that fits your face and frame. Your crown & brim are customizable and they should be. Find a place local (if possible โ€“ in NEPA we have Thomas Broโ€™s Western and others who attend shows to shape hats) or online (there are plenty ie: the CowLot). Some places even offer hat kits which allow you to measure your head, pick a crown, and a brim that works for you. A good hat sure makes a difference.

Get yourself a good pair of western boots that you could ride all day in. There are loads of options out there these days, but again, quality does make a difference!

Wild rags, vests, jackets are all optional attire. Wild rags are more often used in chilly months, though they can be worn anytime. If youโ€™re lucky enough to show in the colder temperatures, wild rags can help keep your neck warm as well as tie in your outfit. They should be tied correctly and not excessively loose: ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™  ๐™จ๐™–๐™›๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฎ. If you're going to show in them, make sure they are fitted to not look sloppy.

Vests or jackets may be worn as well. Jackets are generally only worn if it is chilly. The same goes for most vests, but lighter vests are additionally seen being worn to tie in an outfit and can be a super fun, and catchy accessory!

Now for your horse: tying in an attractive saddle blanket above your work pad really seals the deal. Ideally, this blanket should match your shirt/vest/wild rag/etc. and complement your horseโ€™s color. There are loooooads of different businesses offering custom as well as pre-made saddle blankets and the options are endless (and an addiction ๐Ÿซฃ). Have fun with it but keep in mind what complements you and your horse best!

๐‘๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ: You and your horse should look like a cohesive package -- both while riding and with your attire. Having a good movin', broke, handy ranch horse while boasting an attractive look between your shirt, chaps/chinks, hat, jeans, saddle blanket, etc. will boost eye appeal and up that ranch appearance. Make the 'fit sensible and workable, but don't be afraid to have some fun with it ๐Ÿ˜Ž

This sport isnโ€™t easy: Thereโ€™s good and bad influences everywhere. Find a good, true program and commit to it. Yes, you can learn something from everyone, for sure; but the right fit for you and your horse matters. Find the right program & let them help guide you to make the best decisions for your horse & goals.

Who has your best interest at heart? Who tells you the truth, even when it stings, to help you get better? Who builds you up instead of tearing you down? Who is willing to do what's best for you and your horse?

Coaching, teaching & training fuels me. It isnโ€™t about the scores, the ribbons, the earnings: itโ€™s about creating good horsemen & women, building confidence, and creating the best horse & rider team possible through correct riding and training.

Sometimes, this means going back and fixing holes or bad habits that they have learned or created โ€“ and in order for them to accomplish their goals, this must be addressed.

This sport takes a lot of dedication, time, effort โ€“ this is why lessoning regularly and becoming ๐’„๐’๐’Ž๐’Ž๐’Š๐’•๐’•๐’†๐’… ๐’•๐’ ๐’‚ ๐’‘๐’“๐’๐’ˆ๐’“๐’‚๐’Ž is so important. Show up, dedicate the time, stay hungry, and donโ€™t let the bad days win โ€“ Lord knows every ride isnโ€™t going to be rainbows and butterflies.

And when the hard conversations with your coach/trainer come along, donโ€™t feel defeated. Good coaches and trainers know that in order to help you progress, sometimes there are things to be adjusted or fixed, and that conversation can hurt your ego. Know that they are in your corner โ€“ they want to see your success as much as or more than you doโ€ฆ I know I do.

Many are putting more in than just the hour you see. I personally spend endless hours thinking about ways to help my clients achieve their goals; making notes; reading; thinking of different exercises for them & their horse; continuing my own education to help them. We care more than you know.

This business isnโ€™t about a paycheck โ€“ itโ€™s about helping people become the best riders and horsemen they possibly can be; training horses to their full potential; then pairing the two together.

I feel really honored to have coached & met so many amazing people and to have been able to train on some great horses so far in my career. Hereโ€™s to many more!

And thank you to all of you who have trusted ME to be in your corner๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฉต

Our Story

Abigail's love for horses began at the young age of three when her older sister got her first miniature horse. She and her three older sisters all continued owning, riding, showing, and gaining knowledge with horses. Abigail continued by showing IHSA in college as well as receiving a degree in Business with a minor in Equestrian Studies. When Abigail first saw massage used on her equine athletes and its benefits, she knew she wanted to become certified. Abigail attended school through Midwest Natural Healing for Animals, following the Amassage method developed by Beverly Brady. This school provides much more than just massage techniques: she learned in-depth biomechanics, causes of pain, hoof & dental information, saddle fit and placement, rehab strategies, the ability to eyeball a horse and identify issues before even massaging, and so much more. She plans to immediately move on to become certified in Myofascial Release & Cranial Sacral Therapy. Abigail will continue to add more to her available services in order to keep her equine clients feeling their very best.
